Baldur’s Gate III

Has it really been 20 years since Baldur’s Gate II was originally released? While we have had Baldur’s Gate games before now, Baldur’s Gate III is a game many people were highly anticipating. As I write this the game is in early access, yet even with its early access label, it has a polish many other “finished” games lack.

The Program Review

The game is set in the world of Dungeons and Dragons and takes place the better part of 100 years after the last game. The story is truly amazing in every regard. The Mind Flyers are causing all kinds of trouble and darkness is taking over. You have been implanted with a parasite that will turn you into a Mind Flyer and you need to stop it and stop the darkness from ruling.

The story is a great fantasy style of story. What really nails it is, first of all, the amazing visuals. This game has some of the most amazing cut scenes that I have ever seen! Secondly, the voice acting is the best I have come across in a game in 2020. Not just in the main characters, but the NPCs too!

The creation suite on offer in Baldur’s Gate III is pretty great. As well as creating your character they do have some Origin Characters that are like premade characters and these are awesome and very well done. I found that I legit cared about each member of my party. While I only played the game in single-player, support for four-player parties is available.

While if you have played previous Baldur’s Gate games or are a fan of D&D, you will probably appreciate the game more. I feel that Larian Studios have done an amazing job of making this game accessible for everyone. When you watch a video, it looks like it is very complicated and there is a great deal of depth here.

However, the tutorial systems that are in place are some of the best I have seen. They do not overstay their welcome and they teach you what you need to know, when you need to know it. This means that for seasoned vets, they do not have to spend ages in a tutorial and for those new, the tutorial is fun, informative, and easy to follow.

This is your typical RPG, but it does what it does phenomenally well. You will be exploring many diverse locations. Where you will be getting quests, talking to NPCs, taking on side missions, getting loot, building your stats, and so on. The game ticks all of the boxes of what makes a great RPG. I am having a hard time of thinking of one area where the game struggles in any regard.

The combat is turn-based and I enjoyed it. This is a game where you will be thankful it is so quick and easy to load a save as you will die a lot! While I feel that the game is very accessible, it also is tough as nails. That is part of the fun though, making sure your party compliments each other so that you have the best chance of winning a battle is a real balancing act.

The game is in early access, but it feels like a very complete package already. Truth be told a game as grand as this cannot be talked about in a small review! It is the kind of game, you have to really sink your teeth into, but beware because Baldur’s Gate III may bite back. Without a doubt this is going to be on my games of 2020 list, now go and play it!
