Total War: Warhammer II

Total War: Warhammer II is a downloadable title that combines elements of turn-based strategy and real-time strategy. The tactical part of the game is played in turns, while the battles are fought in real-time. The game is loosely linked to its predecessor and moves the player to other continents, providing four different factions and improved campaigns. The studio behind the game is Creative Assembly which was, naturally, also responsible for the original Total War: Warhammer. The title was released on September 28, 2017, and has been designed to run on PCs with Windows.

The game is available for download on Steam.

The Storyline

The plot of the game takes you to the dark fantasy world, where, according to the title, there is a war between the forces of good and evil. This time, you will not go through the Old Continent, as we know from the first part, but instead, you will reach the West, where there are such continents as Ulthuan, Naggaroth, The Southlands, and Lustria. The campaign mode gives you the opportunity to choose from four different races: High Elves, Dark Elves, Lizardmen, and Skaven. Each of these factions will compete for control of the Great Vortex located above Ulthan, the continent inhabited by Elves.

History of Total War Series

The unique blend of turn-based unit movement on the map and the RTS battles that has been conceived by Creative Assembly has been a massive hit since the release of the first game in the series. Shogun: Total War saw the light of day in Japan in 2000.  Then came Medieval: Total War (2002), Rome: Total War (2004), and Medieval II: Total War (2006). In 2009 we could enjoy Empire: Total War which was set in the 18th century. In 2010 Napoleon: Total War was released, while one year later the players got hold of the continuation of the first game – Total War: Shogun 2 (2011). Total War: Rome II came in 2013, while the game about the invasion of the barbarians in the early Middle Ages Total War: Attila appeared in 2015. The next on the list were the two games set in Warhammer Universe: Total War: Warhammer (2016) and Total War: Warhammer II (2017). Total War Saga: Thrones of Britannia and Total War: Three Kingdoms were announced to be released in 2018. There are also four other games: Spartan: Total Warrior (2005) – a hack & slash for the consoles, Total the mobile game Total War Battles: Shogun (2012), the team-based free-to-play title Total War: Arena, and last but not least the multiplayer Total War Battles: Kingdom (2016).

The Game Mechanics

The mechanics of Total War: Warhammer II are based on what has been implemented in the original game which was released a year earlier. So once again we are dealing with a strategy played on two levels. In the map mode, you manage your units as in a classic turn-based strategy: your turn is followed by the opponent’s turn and so on. During your round, you move armies, expand cities and take care of the economy. The battles are entirely different. These are played in real time, as you quickly issue orders to your units. Before each battle, you should carefully analyze the area on which you are going to fight. This will allow you to make optimal use of the terrain to maximize the potential of your units. The changes to the first game also include the aspect of the campaign itself. The players can now indirectly influence the Great Vortex by stabilizing or destabilizing it. This changes the game’s dynamics because now winning battles doesn’t equal winning the war.

Total War: Warhammer II: the Graphics in the Game

The graphical and physical effects in the game are achieved because of the improved version of the Warscape engine, which was also responsible for handling the first part of Total War: Warhammer. This resulted in an essentially photorealistic effect. The maps are dark, atmospheric, and fit well into the Dark Fantasy world,  of Total War: Warhammer II.

In addition to the extensive single-player campaign, there is also a multiplayer mode where you can clash with other players.
