A Nightmare on Elm Street 5: The Dream Child is the last part of the little trilogy of movies that takes place in this franchise. This was released at the peak of Feddy mania! His movies were making a ton of money, there was a lot of merch and we even had the Freddy’s Nightmares TV show. Plus, work was being done on a video game that would be released the following year.

The Movie Review
Introduction to the Film
For me, parts 3 and 4 are the best that this series has to offer and while part 5 is a fun continuation, it never quite hits the same heights. Returning from the last movie we have Alice who has a boyfriend called Dan and they are very happy together. A year has passed since Alice killed Freddy, but some strange things are starting to happen.
Exploring the Plot
One of the best things about A Nightmare on Elm Street 5: The Dream Child is the scene where we find out how Freddy was born. The next movie would also dive into Freddy’s past, but seeing his mother give birth to him and him being this grotesque evil baby was really cool, actually one of the highlights of the movie now that I think about it.
Unraveling the Mystery
Alice has suspicions that there is something wrong as Amanda Krueger has been appearing to her, almost as if she is warning her about something. Of course, Freddy never stays dead long and he has quite a clever way of getting his power back! Alice is pregnant and he has been using the dreams of her baby to attack her friends.
Visual Storytelling
In typical Nightmare on Elm Street fashion, Alice has a group of friends that start to come around and believe in Freddy as they start to see him too. In many ways, it is a typical Nightmare on Elm Street movie, but I think the stuff with Freddy trying to possess the baby and his backstory being more important were good decisions. They would dive into the “Freddy lore” even more in the next movie, Freddy is Dead, but in that one, they may have gone a tad too far.
Cinematic Analysis
We have full on wise cracking and crazy Freddy here with some even more over the top kills. I get why this is not for everyone, but I always get such a huge kick out of these. There is a scene where one of Alice’s friends, Mark is pulled into a comic book world as he loves comic books and he has to fight Freddy who has taken on the role of a supervillain! While this and a couple of other scenes are fun, like Mecha Dan, for example, I do think 3 and 4 have way more creative and fun kills.
Conclusion
While A Nightmare on Elm Street 5: The Dream Child is not one of the most popular movies in the franchise, I still really enjoy it. I liked the stuff with Amanda Krueger and while other movies have better kills, we still get to see a lot of Freddy, being Freddy! I enjoy this one and think it is a good way to bring the story of Alice to a close.
