Disney likes to go big and they certainly went big with the now downloadable A Wrinkle In Time, their big-screen adaption of the popular 1963 novel. While many will talk about how A Wrinkle In Time (released on March 9, 2018) failed to find an audience and was a bit of a box office dud for Disney, the fact is there is still some of that Disney charm sprinkled across the movie.

The Film Review
Please note that this is a spoiler-free review.
The plot of A Wrinkle In Time revolves around Meg who is played excellently by Storm Reid. Meg has become distant and kind of odd as a result of never being able to get over her father disappearing four years earlier. Her father who is played by Chris Pine (I am a huge Chris Pine fan) was a scientist working with the theory of creating a “wrinkle in time” to make it so you can travel anywhere in space-time instantly.
Thanks to a celestial being called Mrs. Whatsit who is played by Reese Witherspoon who clearly had an awesome time in the role. Meg learns that her father is still alive, but he is trapped and that Meg can save him. Meg along with her little brother Charles (Deric McCabe) and a boy who has a crush on her, Calvin (Levi Miller) set off on an adventure to save her father.
It is a fun story that you may think sounds like it is just all about sci-fi and I would have to say that you would class this as a sci-fi movie. However, A Wrinkle In Time has far more heart than most people give it credit for. The way that Meg is so unsure of herself and how she holds herself responsible for what happened to her dad is rather brutal. But you get to see her come into her own and I really cannot praise Storm Reid highly enough.
As well as Reese Witherspoon, there are two other celestial beings in the movie. Mrs. Which played by Oprah Winfrey and Mrs. Who played by Mindy Kaling. I love these ladies! Oprah is a little stoic for me, but as a threesome, they work so well. Not just as characters but a visual spectacle. Their costumes and just the way they are is very captivating.
Speaking of captivation, visual effects are the main thing that A Wrinkle In Time has going for it. The director, Ava DuVernay did a great job in making sure each place that the kids traveled to was showcased and there are some great locations from a really creepy beach, disturbing suburbia and a place that looks like heaven. I would imagine that in 4K this is a movie that will really blow you away as it is quite the visual spectacle.
The running time is a little under two hours and I think that hurts the movie. The last part of the movie happens at 100 miles per hour and it does feel rushed. In my opinion that is because this is a movie that is clearly aimed at kids so I get that they were trying to keep the runtime to under two hours. With that being said I do think that there is enough here for adults to have some fun with too.
The Bottom Line
A Wrinkle In Time is far from a perfect movie, but if you have kids and are looking for something You can stream and watch together. A Wrinkle In Time is well worth a watch.
The visual effects are stunning and some of the performances, especially those of Storm Reid and Reese Witherspoon are fantastic. While it may not be an all time classic from Disney, there is enough here to make it worth checking out.
