As someone who has loved the majority of the movies that DreamWorks has produced, Abominable was a movie I really wish I made the effort to see in the theatre. Well, I finally got around to watching it and it is another fantastic family movie from the talented team at DreamWorks who put this together with the Chinese animation studio, Pearl Studio.

The Movie Review
The movie was written and directed by Jill Culton who has worked on some of the biggest animated movies such as Toy Story, Monsters Inc, Surfs Up and Shrek Forever After to name a few. It also has a great cast featuring talents such as Chloe Bennet, Eddy Izzard, Sarah Paulson, Albert Tsai, and Tenzing Norgay Trainor to name some of the main cast.
As the name suggests, Abominable is a movie that is about a yeti. A young yeti is being held captive in a facility that is owned by a businessman called Mr. Burnish and Mr. Burnish wants to prove to the world that yetis are real. He along with his zookeeper, Dr. Zara work to try and make this happen.
Mr. Burnish and Dr. Zara are two fantastic characters. You start out hating them both and thinking they are your typical bad guys, but things are not what they seem and that was pretty awesome and unexpected. This adorable little yeti manages to escape and he finds himself on top of an apartment building where he is resting after getting hurt.
It is here that he meets Yi, a teenager who is saving up to be able to travel across China. She befriends the yeti and gives him the name, Everest. Everest wants to go back to Mount Everest where his family lives and be with them. As Yi wants to explore China, she says she will take him back home.
They are joined by Peng who is a friend of Yi’s and his cousin, Jin. They make a great group as they head out on a road trip to try and help Everest get back home. Of course, Mr. Burnish and Dr. Zara want him back so they can prove that yetis are real and they are hot on their heels trying to capture him again.
Having the movie set in China gives Abominable a very striking look. I think that the artists behind this movie did a fantastic job and it is one of the most visually striking movies that DreamWorks have been a part of. I really do wish that I saw this on the big screen, but the 4K version I watched looked spectacular.
This is a great family movie. I know the idea of a group of teenagers taking a road trip with a yeti makes it sound like it is just all about the laughs. However, Abominable is a movie that also has a big heart and a very nice message of family, looking after others, and doing what is right. If you are looking for a relatively new movie to watch with the kids that you can enjoy as much as they do, Abominable is pretty hard to beat.
