Ash vs Evil Dead

It may have taken 30 years, but I finally got my follow-up to Army of Darkness. When I heard that Bruce Campbell was coming back as Ash, I could not have been any more excited. When I first saw the 2013 Evil Dead movie, I was not super keen as it was not the follow-on from Army of Darkness that I wanted, instead, it went back to the horror roots of the original movie.

The Movie Review

Ash vs Evil Dead on the other hand is just as funny, gory, and crazy as Evil Dead II and Army of Darkness. There are three seasons and each season is fantastic. The first season sets things up really well in addition to giving Ash more depth. Seasons 2 and 3 are just flat-out epic in every regard and I could not pick a favorite between them. Rather than thinking of the show as separate seasons, think of it as just one long 30-episode single season!

I do not want to spoil anything about the show as it has some great twists and turns that I did not see coming and some truly shocking moments. Basically, Ash vs Evil Dead takes place 30 years after Ash makes his return from the medieval ages at the end of Army of Darkness.

Ash has had a very hard time over the last 30 years getting over what happened to him and he has a bit of survivor’s guilt and PTSD over the stuff that he witnessed and had to do. Now, this is still the wisecracking, ass-kicking Ash that we know and love, he just has a lot more depth to him now which I actually really liked.

He has not been living the life of a hero, he has been drifting from place to place working at different branches of Value Stop and just trying to get by. He has tried to destroy the Necronomicon, but it never works so he now sees himself as the protector of the book, but in typical Ash fashion, this does not go well.

Before you know it the Deadites are back and the world is in danger and only Ash Williams can save the day. Actually, that is not true as Ash is joined by two helpers, people who work with him at Value Stop. Ash is aided by Pablo who sees him as the ultimate hero and also by a chick called Kelly who Ash has a bit of a father/daughter relationship.

They make for a fun trio and the show does a great job of introducing interesting new characters for them to fight alongside, save, and of course fight with! I have to say that I loved Lee Majors as Ash’s dad! It is a very well-balanced show and the episodes are not all your typical 45 minutes long, usually running from 25 to 40 minutes.

I love this show! Sam Raimi did such a wonderful job of capturing the magic he had with Evil Dead II and Army of Darkness with Ash vs Evil Dead. If you are someone that always wanted a fourth movie, well this is pretty much it! I also learned that we are getting an animated series based on Ash vs Evil Dead with Bruce Campbell voicing Ash, now that is groovy!

Before I go, I want to talk to you (or warn) about The Evil Dead Groovy Collection. I have reviewed all of the Evil Dead movies on the site and I love them all, so much that I wanted them all and this series in 4K. Ash vs Evil Dead was only available on Blu-Ray, but I found The Evil Dead Groovy Collection which said it was 4K. However, only Evil Dead and Evil Dead II are in 4K, Ash vs Evil Dead was just the standard Blu-Ray release!
