The Movie Review

Directed by Mel Smith and written by the same creators as the show, the movie takes the beloved character of Mr. Bean on a wild ride to the United States, where he winds up in several sticky predicaments.

In his classic style, Mr. Bean must find ways to overcome the most simple of obstacles and fix his many clumsy mistakes, as a work-trip abroad quickly turns sour. Just like the show, the Bean movie is a hilarious adventure that works great for audiences regardless of age or gender.

The Bean movie catches us up with Mr. Bean (Rowan Atkinson), working as a security guard at the Royal National Gallery in London. As usual, Mr. Bean struggles with even the simplest of tasks, annoying many of his bosses in the process. As the National Gallery prepares to oversee a historic painting transfer from France to a gallery in Los Angeles, California, the board of managers attempt to fire Mr. Bean.

Fortunately, the director of the gallery has a soft spot for Mr. Bean, and refuses to let him go. As an alternative way to punish Mr. Bean, the board votes for him to travel to the United States and represent them during the painting deal. As Mr. Bean is whisked away to America on a business trip, the managers hope that he will embarrass himself enough to get fired.

Just like in the original sitcom, the humor of the Bean movie is very silly, with tons of slapstick humor. Mr. Bean’s disruptive nature gets him into trouble often, ranging from mishaps with the police to career mix-ups that place him in exceptionally dangerous situations.

Every scene is packed with hilarious antics, making the Bean movie an entertaining adventure with road-trip qualities. Once Mr. Bean finally lands in the United States, he meets up with David Langley (Peter MacNicol), a representative of the Los Angeles gallery.

David, expecting a genius art critic and doctor, quickly starts to notice that Mr. Bean is not the man he expected. Despite this, the pair try to make the best of things, attempting to save David’s and Bean’s reputations before Bean’s antics ruin the day.

If there’s one thing that’s clear about the Mr. Bean character, it’s that he can turn any simple situation into a funny one.

Rowan Atkinson has a knack for making the audience giggle, whether through his weird facial expressions, silly demeanor, or generally goofy attitude. While the plot of the Bean movie can falter from time to time, the experience is salvaged by the great performance from Atkinson. There are several scenes that remain unimportant to the overall story, but have become iconic due to their timeless humor.

Generally speaking, the Bean movie is more adult than expected, resulting in some risque comedy that works very well. For that reason, it might not be the greatest movie for a family night, but it’s still well worth your time. The straightforward jokes and iconic character of Mr. Bean are highly effective and manage to produce quite a few chuckles, so check out the Bean movie if you’re looking to brighten your mood.
