The Film Review
Big Hero 6 brings us the story of a 14-year young boy named Hiro Hamada who, although is considered a genius, spends most of his time and effort building robots and taking part in illegal robot fights. As soon as he gains inspiration from his brother Tadashi, Hiro decides to join a university until a sudden twist of fate leads to his brother’s death. Hiro, depressed and vengeful, manages to activate his late brother’s inflatable healthcare robot called Baymax. After finding out that his brother’s killer was, in fact, Professor Robert Callaghan, the same individual who accepted him into the university, Hiro sets out with Baymax and Tadashi’s friends to find Callaghan and avenge his brother’s murder.
Despite Disney’s attainment of Marvel Studios, Big Hero 6 was solely produced by Disney Animation Studios. Big Hero 6 was actually the first Disney film to star characters from Marvel and the best part about combining the two mega companies was that viewers would get to experience the relationship between Hiro and Baymax as Disney-Conventional whereas it would also feature partial Marvel heroic arcs.
The film was animated and designed in such a way that it would basically combine Eastern Asian culture with the Western culture. The city of Fransokyo is a combination of San Francisco and Tokyo, the animation was done in such a way that the city would be similar to San Francisco but with a Japanese aesthetic involved.
Big Hero 6 was a mega project, such that involved 90 animators to work on it at one point or another. Numerous software like Denizen and Bonzai were used to populate the city with people, trees and other aspiring details, which all together combined to make the film what it is.
The plot of Big Hero 6 consists of two major themes: Brotherhood and how murder for murder is not the answer.
Brotherhood was a major factor that basically triggered Hiro to seek revenge for his dead brother. Hiro’s brother, Tadashi, was his main inspiration for quitting his illegal activities and actually set his path straight by taking admission at a recognized university. After his brother’s untimely death, Hiro decides to go all out against the murderer Callaghan but thanks to Tadashi’s friends, Hiro realizes that he would be no different than Callaghan If he used Baymax to mercilessly kill him.
Due to its plot and themes, the film won an academy award for Best Animated Feature film. It received a nomination at the Annie and Golden Globe awards for the Best Animated Feature film.
The plot and animation combined with the music composed by Henry Jackman make Big Hero 6 the perfect film to watch with the family. It’s exactly the kind of family film that appeals to the kids while also being intense enough to keep the adults stick till the end as well.
