It may be over a year late, but Black Widow is finally here. The latest installment from the MCU was supposed to be released in 2020, but due to the pandemic was delayed for what felt like forever. A character who has been around since Iron Man 2, finally gets the chance to shine in her own standalone movie and it was a ton of fun.

The Movie Review
Black Widow has a fantastic cast, Scarlett Johannsson is back as Natasha Romanoff. She is joined by Florence Pugh as Yelena, David Harbour as Alexi/Red Guardian, and Rachel Weisz as Melina. A strong support cast with the likes of Ray Winstone, O-T Fagbenle, and William Hurt returning as General Ross fill in the other main parts of the cast perfectly.
The movie has an interesting setting. It takes place during the events between Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War. Black Widow is on the run after refusing to sign on the dotted line after the events of Avengers: Age of Ultron. She is being hunted all over the world by General Ross and trying to just get by.
We get a great scene right at the start of the movie of a teenage Natasha along with her “sister”, “mother” and “father”. This opening scene does a great job of showing just how long she has been working as a spy and it is very well done. Eventually, her past comes back to her present as her sister, Yelena is now part of the same Red Room that trained her.
Yelena who is played by Florence Pugh is just fantastic in this role and a great deal of fun. Yelena eventually gets away from the hold that the Red Room and its leader have on her and wants to free all of the other girls that are under its spell. She tries to get help from Natasha, but before long they need help.
This leads them to go to Alexi and Melina who here their parents. David Harbour as Alexi/Red Guardian is an absolute riot, the part with him in prison, telling his old war stories is just so much fun. We get a big team up as they try to avoid being hunted down by Taskmaster and put a stop to the Red Room once and for all.
The whole cast is great, but Taskmaster is a tad on the disappointing side. The action scenes where you get to see Taskmaster in action are awesome. However, fans of the character and people who know the character may be a tad disappointed. Yet, for this story, the portrayal does work.
I had a great time watching Black Widow and think it is a great way to kick of this next wave of Marvel movies. In many ways, it kind of reminds me of Captain America: Winter Soldier, but only with a bit more focus on action. The set pieces are fantastic and Scarlett Johansson gets a great send-off as a character she has been playing for a very long time.
