My wife actually picked this up on a whim while out grocery shopping as she thought that it looked good. As Armie Hammer (Death on the Nile) and Timothée Chalamet (The French Dispatch, Dune, Don’t Look Up) were in the lead roles, I was sure that Call Me by Your Name had the potential to be a great romantic movie. I missed this one when it was initially released back in 2017 and had my wife not found it, I probably would have never had the pleasure of watching it.

The Movie Review
The movie has a lot of talent behind the camera as well as in front of it. It is brought to us by Luca Guadagnino in the directors’ chair, working on a screenplay put together by James Ivory. Looking at this now, with the amazing cast and the people behind the movie, I am shocked that this one slipped past me!
Call Me by Your Name is set in Italy during the early 80s. Elio (Timothée Chalamet) is a 17-year-old young man that lives with his parents. Elio’s father is an archology professor and he has asked his assistant, 24-year-old Oliver (Armie Hammer) to come and stay with the family during the summer.
Elio is a kind and quiet young man who at first does not really think much of Oliver at all. Whereas Elio is kind of reserved and keeps to himself, Oliver is much more confident and more forward in the way he talks and acts. An attraction grows, but it is not just a physical attraction between them. There is something much deeper here and you can tell that both men find it a bit hard to express this.
We also see that Elio is still not sure about his sexuality as he has a friend/girlfriend called Marzia. The bond that Elio and Oliver have in this movie truly is something special. It is a summer romance and one that truly is lovely and while you want these two to make it work and stay together.
You know the whole time that you are watching Call Me by Your Name that at the end of the day, this is a summer romance. Oliver works for Elios dad and he has to return home to America once the summer ends. It is destined to fail right from the start, but it is such a heartfelt romance that you cannot help but love it.
There is a great mixture of love and heartbreak in this movie. I think that you really do connect with Elio and it is such a great “coming of age” story. One thing I do also have to mention is that Elio’s dad played by Michael Stuhlbarg is such a great guy and one of the really good “movie dads” that are out there.
While Call Me by Your Name is a movie that is probably going to make you a bit sad by the end of it. I do also think that it is a movie that also has a lot of heart and you do feel that Elio is going to be alright as he grows and learns from his summer romance. If you are looking for a very well-written, well-acted, and just a good romantic movie to watch with your significant other, you cannot go wrong with this.
