Don’t Look Up

I knew that Don’t Look Up was going to be a movie that I loved! This is brought to us by Adam McKay and it is a fantastic piece of satire that is so fitting given today’s political climate and social media-obsessed society. This is a Netflix original, it was their last big hit of 2021 and it is 10000 percent worth your time checking out.

The Movie Review

We have two scientists in Dr. Randall Mindy who is one of the top astronomy professors in the country and Kate Dibiasky who attends the university and is on her way to becoming a Dr herself. These are played by Leonardo Di Caprio and Jennifer Lawrence and this pairing is just superb! The way he is kind of awkward and shy and she is loud, angry, and more forceful is excellent.

They discover that there is a comet that is on a collision course with earth and it will result in an extinction-level event when the comet hits Earth! They end up getting in front of the president (Meryl Streep) and her Chief of Staff and son, Jason (Jonah Hill) and telling them what they have found out.

Mindy and Dibiasky start doing the rounds, trying to talk to anyone who will listen to try and get something done about this. From self-obsessed celebrities to tech moguls, it is just so hilarious the way the movie pokes fun at what modern society has become. I know I have been describing Don’t Look Up as if it is an out-and-out comedy, but there is more to it than that.

The trailers make it seem like it is just all about getting laughs. However, just when you think the movie is going to go over the edge and become completely ridiculous it manages to reign it in just the right amount to really make you think. On the flip side of this, I am sure there are some who will watch this and just laugh their butts off the whole time.

I have already mentioned a few actors, but this movie is stacked with incredible talent. Rob Morgan is awesome, Cate Blanchett and Tyler Perry bring a lot of charm. Actors such as Ron Pearlman, Timothée Chalamet, and a very amusing showing from Ariana Grande are just a few of the highlights that spring to mind. I am missing others, but with a movie that has so many great performances, it is hard to name them all in a quick review.

If I had one criticism of the movie it is that it lasts just a tad too long. It clocks in at a little over two hours and to be honest, they could have cut like 10 minutes and it probably would have been even better. That is me nitpicking to be fair, but there are some shots that feel a little too artsy-fartsy that could have been cut.

The Bottom Line

Overall, Don’t Look Up was a great time and I can see why even though it came out at the end of the year, some folks have it as their movie of 2021. I had a fun time with this movie and think that it nails the satire it is going for near perfectly. If you have not watched this one yet, make sure to you do as it is fantastic. Just make sure you watch the end credits scene as it is great!
