Catch Me If You Can Review: A Thrilling Cat and Mouse Game
Catch Me If You Can is the story of a man called, Frank Abagnale who is played by Leonardo DiCaprio. Frank Abagnale is the ultimate master con artist and managed to get millions of dollars thanks to his scams. Frank would pose as a pilot and his forgery would show no signs of slowing down. However, the massive amount of fraud that Frank has been committing has not gone unnoticed.
The Chase: Frank vs. Carl Hanratty
This is where the FBI comes in, specifically, FBI Agent, Carl Hanratty, played by Tom Hanks. Carl finds out about Frank and starts to basically chase him down and try to bring him to justice. The thing here is that there is a very strange and weird bond between Frank and Carl that grows throughout the movie, there is one particular phone call scene between the two that has always stuck with me.
A Dynamic Duo Under Spielberg’s Direction
The fact that Frank and Carl are played by two of the most talented actors of all time under the direction of one of the greatest directors is of course the reason why Catch Me If You Can is so entertaining. From the start all the way until the end, you are always wondering how the heck Frank is going to get out of the trouble he has gotten himself in this time. It is so much fun, but there is a lot of heart and drama going on with the story too.
The Fascination with Frank Abagnale
I found Frank to be such a fascinating character. It was like even when things were going well for him, Frank needed that thrill and was willing to risk it all. There were a couple of moments where I would just wish that Frank would stop while it seemed like he was ahead or even turn himself in before things got too out of hand and out of control.
True Story? The Real Frank Abagnale
I went into Catch Me If You Can under the impression that it was all based on a true story and much of this went down. Granted whenever something says that it is based on a true story “based” is always the keyword! I get that with a movie they have to change things sometimes to tell a more coherent and interesting story. The recent Iron Claw is a prime example of that, it is a movie I love, based on something I know a lot about and I understood the changes they made.
However, after watching Catch Me If You Can a few times, I did a little deep dive into the story of Frank Abagnale and was kind of bummed to see that most of what goes down in this story, is heavily disputed. To be fair, Frank being this master con man and getting a movie made where he made a load of BS is really funny and actually very fitting with the character we get to know in the movie. However, it is a bit disappointing to know that much of what we see in the movie is just completely made up. Still, that does not stop it from being very entertaining.
