Charlie’s Angels (2019)

The 2019 Charlie’s Angels movie is a really weird one. I loved the two early 00s Charlie’s Angels movies (Charlie’s Angels and Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle), they were cheesy and they just embraced their ridiculousness. They were super fun movies and the three leading ladies had fantastic chemistry, I always wondered why we never got a third one.

The Movie Review

When I heard that they were making a new movie with a new set of Angels I was intrigued. I went from intrigued to interested when I heard that Elizabeth Banks was writing and directing it as I am a big fan of hers. However, when stuff like the movie was made by women for women was starting to come out, it made me roll my eyes and think that this was one of those movies that thought it was something far more than it was.

The New Cast and Chemistry

I followed the movie and as the cast came together with Kristen Stewart, Naomi Scott, Patrick Stewart, and Djimon Hounsou as well as Banks herself, I thought it sounded interesting. They dropped a couple of trailers and there was just something off about it. This may just be me, but the trailers made me feel like the movie was trying way too hard. Those first two movies were goofy, but they had charm and were badass!

To be fair, I do not think that the 2019 Charlie’s Angels movie is anywhere near as bad as many folks make out. I understand why the behavior and stuff Elizabeth Banks was saying made people turn against the movie, however, I would not say that this is terrible by any means.

The Plot and Action

The plot has a young woman called Elena who is a top engineer coming up with a program that could be used for nefarious means! Elena wants to expose those she works for and ends up joining, Sabina and Jane and they make up our new trio of Angels. Kristen Stewart, Naomi Scott, and relative newcomer, Ella Balinska have great chemistry together and I get the impression these three ladies had a blast making this movie.

The problem is that this is a movie that is just “ok”. There are many action scenes, but this was Elizabeth Bank’s first time directing action and it shows. There are many weird camera angles and the action scenes just have a weird vibe to them. I am not saying it is bad, but there is certainly something that is off about it that is for sure.

Kristen Stewart’s Surprising Performance

One of the most surprising things for me was Kristen Stewart. Kristen Stewart is a great actress, she is freaking awesome in the movie, Underwater. However, I cannot recall ever seeing her do comedy before, but here she is legit funny. She was by far my favorite character and it would be great to see her do more stuff like this.

Final Thoughts

As I have said a couple of times, Charlie’s Angels is not as bad as many people would have you believe. I am not saying it is great, but I have seen way worse. I would probably never add this to my physical movie collection, but I am glad I watched it. If you are struggling for something to watch via streaming, you can do way worse than this and you never know, you may actually have some fun with it.
