I thought that Dune and Dune: Part Two were fantastic and I grew up loving the original as well. However, Dune: Prophecy was just not grabbing my attention which is kind of weird, considering how much I enjoyed the two recent movies. I felt that the trailers and the promo material were really underwhelming. As I write this, the final episode has not aired so I cannot say for sure if this will stick the landing. I can say right off the bat that I have enjoyed some parts of the show, but other parts have been underwhelming.

The Movie Review
The Origins of the Bene Gesserit
This is a prequel to the two recent Dune movies, coming in at 10,000 years before! Mankind has banned AI technology and they are still finding their way. The real reason for this show is to showcase the birth of the Bene Gesserit and the tension and strife that happened as these powerful for lack of a better term, witches came to be what they are.
The Sisterhood’s Story Steals the Spotlight
Dune: Prophecy is at its best when it is all focused on the sisterhood and the stuff going on there. The way the show jumps from the past to the present is very well done and as an origin story, I do think that this works really well. The casting here of Emily Watson and Olivia Williams is perfect!
Emperor Javicco Corrio and the Political Drama
One of the things from the underwhelming trailer that did make me interested in the show was Mark Strong. He plays the role of Emperor Javicco Corrio and honestly, the stuff about him and the drama behind the scenes and the whole political drama did nothing for me at all. To be honest, I found most of the stuff that did not center around the sisterhood to be rather boring.
A Treat for Longtime Dune Fans
You long time Dune fans are going to love the fan service. There are some great nods to the world of Dune here and hardcore fans are sure to get a kick out of it all and there are some places where it does have the same look as the movies. However, Dune: Prophecy despite being a big budget HBO show, looks kind of cheap more often than not.
Disappointing Visual Quality
I know it is harsh to compare a TV series to two massive movies, but even if those movies were not a thing. I would still think that Dune: Prophecy had a cheap look to it. The CGI and even some of the practical effects and some of the costumes just look like they were put together as cheaply as possible. With a big budget HBO show, you expect a certain kind of visual quality and that is really lacking here. Especially with how good recent shows like The Penguin and House of the Dragon have looked.
A Mixed Viewing Experience
When I started watching Dune: Prophecy I thought that as my expectations were not super high, I may get really into it, but that was not the case. I did not hate this show by any means and I have heard many others say that they love it. However, I just think that once to take away the sisterhood and the birth of the Bene Gesserit, you are left with something that is frankly, pretty boring.
