With a fantastic cast and the setting of the Apollo 11 mission, Fly Me to the Moon should have been a movie that I loved, but I had a hard time getting into this one. I saw the trailer for this and there was just something about it that did not click with me. Perhaps it was the fact that I had been to the cinema a ton of times (mainly repeat viewings of Deadpool & Wolverine) and I was a little burned out so I was planning on skipping this one.

The Movie Review
However, I do like Channing Tatum, Scarlett Johansson, and Woody Harrelson, plus Ray Romano being in the movie is pretty cool, so I decided to go and watch it. Look, Fly Me to the Moon is not a bad movie at all, but it is just an ok one and you know where this romantic comedy is going pretty much ten minutes into it.
The backdrop of the movie is the Apollo 11 launch. Woodle Harrelson plays a man called Moe who hires Scarlett Johansson’s Kelly to try and ramp up NASA’s PR to try and get more funding. Kelly is not exactly who she seems and Moe plays on this to get her to do what he wants as she knows that she is the right person to get people pumped up and believe in the space race so that they get the funding they need.
The Characters and Premise
We also have Cole Davies who is played by Channing Tatum. Cole is the person overseeing the Apollo 11 launch and he is a very stoic and serious kind of guy and he is at odds with Kelly and what she wants to do. However, Cole understands that they need funding so he and Kelly are forced to spend a lot of time together… you get where this is going already right?
The twist to Fly Me to the Moon is that Kelly is given a secret job by Moe to film a fake moon landing in case something goes wrong with the real Apollo 11 mission. Hey, the premise of this is awesome and something that is kind of fun. However, Fly Me to the Moon is a movie that never seems to get out of second gear, and it just kind of plods along for a couple of hours.
Final Thoughts
I would not say that the movie was super boring and there are a few charming moments here and there. Yet, I never found myself caring a great deal for the characters or even feeling like there was a lot at stake here. I did roll my eyes considerably at the scene where Cole tries to convince a potential religious investor how science and religion go hand in hand, but apart from that there was nothing I found offensive or over-the-top yawn-inducing.
I am lucky that I have these Unlimited Cards for my local cinema chain (Cineworld) I pay a monthly fee and I see all the movies I want, in that regard, Fly Me to the Moon was not a huge loss. However, I would not have been super happy had I actually paid for a ticket to see this. Even if you are a huge fan of the cast, I would suggest thinking about waiting for this one to hit streaming.
