Frankenstein (2025)

2025 has been a fantastic year for movies, and we still have a few huge titles to go as I write this, such as Wicked For Good, Zootopia 2, Five Nights at Freddy’s 2, and, of course, a new Avatar. However, one of the movies I was most excited for this year was Guillermo del Toro’s take on the horror classic, Frankenstein! This did get a limited theatre release, but I saw this on Netflix.

The Movie Review

Hey, I had good reason to be excited. The recent revivals of The Wolfman and Nosferatu were a ton of fun, and I had high hopes that Frankenstein would be the same. As well as being brought to us by a director I am a huge fan of, Oscar Issac as Victor Frankenstein sounded like great casting, and I was very interested to see how Jacob Elordi would handle being the monster. Not to forget the fact that we had recent horror royalty in Mia Goth in a prominent role, dual roles actually!

The movie is told in four different parts. Well, there is an intro and an ending, and in between we get Victor’s story, and we also get the Creature’s story as well. A very wealthy man has hired a somewhat disgraced Victor Frankenstein to continue his research into reanimation, with the hopes that he will be able to cure him. This, as you would expect, leads to the creation of the Creature.

While this is happening, Victor has a major crush on Mia Goth’s Elizabeth. The way Victor is jealous of the Creature and Elizabeth is hard to watch, clearly showing that, in many ways, Victor is more of a monster than the Creature is. Well, it all goes wrong, there is an explosion, and the Creature breaks free and tries to find his place in the world, along with Victor.

The premise of Frankenstein is fantastic, especially if you are a fan of the original old movies. However, I hate to say this, but I was bored to tears! Look, many people love this movie and say that it is one of the most faithful adaptations that we have ever had. More power to those people, and I wish I could say the same. I so wanted to like this movie, and it honestly felt like it lasted over three hours.

I could not give you a specific reason either as to why this did not click with me. The performances are fantastic, the set design is great, Jacob Elordi does a wonderful job as the Creature, but despite me saying that. I found this new version of Frankenstein to be very boring. This is the kind of movie that I know I have to watch again at some point, as I feel like this should have been something that I really enjoyed. However, this is still pretty fresh, so I am really not ready to jump back into this again.

There is 100 percent a good movie in here; it has all the parts to make it so, and there are many things that I should like, but for one reason or another, it just did not click with me at all. By all means, if you are interested in this, give it a try, as I said, there are many people who loved this movie, on IMDB, it has a bunch of 9s and 10s! For me, if I am being honest, I would much rather watch the mid-’90s one than this.
