Growing up, I loved the Mad Max movies. I would watch them over and over again with my cousin who whenever we would play, would call himself Max and he even named one of his kids Max! I thought that Mad Max: Fury Road was tremendous and Charlize Theron’s Furiosa was a huge part of the reason I loved that movie so much.

The Movie Review
Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga is a movie that I felt did not need to exist. I thought that Furiosa was so badass, but did we really need an origin/prequel story about her? Still, the trailer looked badass and as a huge fan of the franchise, I knew that I had to go and check this out in the theatre and I was blown away.
This is one of the best and most fun movies I have seen in the theatre in 2024 and it sucks that this is not catching on and is looking like it will be a massive bomb financially for the studio! The thing is, everyone I have spoken to who has seen this has loved it so I hope that it will eventually catch its audience.
A Surprisingly Engaging Opening Act
One of the things that surprised me about the movie was the opening act. We all know that Anna Taylor-Joy is Furiosa in the film, but the opening act has Alyla Browne playing her at a younger age. The stuff with the younger Furiosa is fantastic and it shows you the horror she experienced, lets you know what she wants and it just makes you connect to her so much more as a character. This opening act was a very welcome surprise!
Anna Taylor-Joy’s Captivating Performance
We get to see Furiosa and her quest for revenge and survival and it is just a balls-to-the-wall thrill ride. Much like Mad Max, Furiosa does not speak a great deal, but Anna Taylor-Joy is such a great actress, you can tell what she is thinking/feeling, just by the way she looks. She has such an epic screen presence and I would honestly say that this is her greatest performance to date. I love Charlize Theron, but Anna Taylor-Joy brings her own amazing energy to the role and I would have a really hard time picking between which one I liked the best.
Chris Hemsworth’s Villainous Turn
The villain of the movie is played by Chris Hemsworth and he is just so much fun here as Dementus! Dementus is an amazing villain as he is bat poop crazy and a truly evil person, but he believes what he is doing is the right thing to do. I always feel that the best villains are those who no matter how bad they are, think they are right, even if they have the most screwed up logic to think that they are right.
What I love about Dementus is that he is clearly a bad guy. However, Dementus has a ton of charisma and he is even pretty funny too, there is this big speech that he does and it is some of the best stuff that I have ever seen from Chris Hemsworth. He was just so much fun, probably the best villain I have seen on the big screen all year.
A Visual and Auditory Spectacle
I also have to say that Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga is an absolute visual spectacle. This movie looks phenomenal and as you would expect, it features some amazing vehicular action scenes that are arguably the best the franchise has ever had to offer. My theatre also had the sound cranked all the way up for this and that was awesome. I cannot wait until this comes out on 4K so I can watch it at home with my new soundbar cranked all the way up, well as loud as my wife will let me, but you get the idea.
Look, being a fan and dare I say shill of the Mad Max series, I was pretty sure that I was going to like this movie. However, the more I think about it, the more I cannot think of a single thing I did not like about this movie. It was so good that when we came out, I said to my wife, I could easily go back in and watch that again right away. Please if you like the look of this make the effort to go and see this in the theatre, it deserves to make way more money than it is currently doing. This is one of the best movies I have had the pleasure to see in a theatre this year!
