Get Smart

Get Smart is a 2008 action comedy based on an old TV show from the 60s. It is a movie that I think many people may not want to give a chance, but it is actually a whole lot of fun. It has Steve Carell (Bruce Almighty, The 40-Year-Old Virgin) and Anne Hathaway (Alice in Wonderland, Ocean’s 8) in the lead roles and they are great together, if you like both these actors, I am certain that you will like this movie.

The Movie Review

We also have a solid supporting cast here with the likes of Dwayne The Rock Johnson, Terry Crews, James Caan, and even a little cameo from Bill Murray which is awesome. Get Smart is one of those movies where you watch the trailer and you do not think it is going to be all that great, even 10 minutes in, the movie may not grab you. However, this is one of those movies that I feel really picks up steam and just gets better and better.

What we have here is a spy movie. Steve Carell plays the role of Max Smart. Max is an analyst for CONTROL which is a super secret spy agency that protects the world. He is fantastic at his job, but he dreams of becoming a field agent, something his superior is not keen on at all as he is so useful where he is.

Characters and Cast

Max is a very likable character, he is super smart, but he lacks street smarts if you know what I am saying. Think of a less bumbling version of Frank Drebin from The Naked Gun and you will have a good idea of what Max Smart is all about. Steve Carell is at his charming best here and as always, his comedic charming is amazing.

Action and Comedy

There is a rival terrorist organization called KAOS and they attack the CONTROL headquarters, not only bombing the building but also discovering the identities of the agents! The only agents left who have not been exposed are Max and Agent 99 who is played by Anne Hathaway.

Movie Analysis

KAOS has a huge terrorist attack planned and it is up to Max and Agent 99 to put a stop to it. Agent 99 being such a badass and super skilled in the field and Max being thrown in at the deep end makes for some very amusing moments. Plus, they are so great together, you cannot help, but like them both.

Conclusion

While Get Smart is an action comedy, I think that it is actually pretty underrated as far as being an action movie goes. There are some fantastic action scenes in this movie and that is something I do not think it gets enough credit for. It even has some interesting twists and turns as there is a double agent in play and you never know for sure who it is.

I will admit that I have never seen a single episode of the Get Smart TV show so I cannot for sure say how faithful this is. What I can say is that Get Smart is a super fun action spy movie that is sure to leave you with a big smile on your face. It is honestly a real shame that they did not make another one of these as I would have loved to have seen what kind of adventure Max and Agent 99 went on next!
