Goosebumps Review
The Plot
Goosebumps revolves around a young boy named Zach Cooper who has recently just moved to Madison, Delaware after his father’s death. After settling in, Zach meets and becomes attracted to a girl named Hannah whose father, Mr. Shivers, constantly warns him to stay away from her. One night, after hearing noises coming from Hannah’s house, Zach breaks into Mr. Shivers’ house after tricking into going to the police station.
There, Zach discovers a shelf containing numerous Goosebumps manuscripts. Upon his friend Champ’s insistence, Zach unlocks one of the manuscripts which releases the Abominable Snowman from The Abominable Snowman of Pasadena. Zach, Champ, and Hannah try to recapture the snowman but fail to do so until Mr. Shivers arrive.
It is then revealed that Mr. Shivers is actually R. L. Stine, the original author of the Goosebumps manuscripts who wrote these stories in order to scare away the bullies who used to pick on him. In the midst of all the revelations, Slappy from Night of the Living Dummy burns his own manuscript and steals the rest of them in order release the other monsters as part of his revenge against Stine. Slappy traverses through Madison city, releasing numerous monsters on his way.
Zach asks Stine to write another story to clear the chaos. Meanwhile, the monsters force Zach and the others to take refuge in his school where Slappy cuts off Stine’s fingers to prevent him from completing the story. It is also revealed how Hannah herself is a monster taken from one of Stine’s manuscripts.
Stine hands over the typewriter to Zach who completes the story, sucking in all the monsters inside including Hannah. A few months later, Stine becomes a substitute teacher and reveals to Zach that he has written Hannah’s manuscript again to bring her back.
The Production of the Movie
Goosebumps featured animation and effects that were produced by Moving Picture Company (MPC). MPC delivered a wide variety of work including 700 VFX shots, producing CG environments, and the animation of creatures. The company created over 17 creatures including the Werewolf of Fever Swamp, the Abominable Snowman of Pasadena, the indestructible evil lawn gnomes, and the vampire poodle.
According to VFX supervisor Pete Dionne and Robert Winter, the company along with the director wanted the monsters’ movements to look as real as possible without any signs of deformation. The most challenging task faced by MPC was designing the Blob and the plant monster due to their unique forms that required intense focus.
The Music
The main score of the film was composed by Danny Elfman. It was released on 23rd October 2015 by Sony Classical Records. The film itself also features numerous popular songs including Headlights by OPIEN, Get Ugly by Jason Derulo, and Racketeer by The Blue Van.
Overall, Goosebumps is a film which is scary yet, humorous at the same time. For all those who are fans of R. L. Stine, Goosebumps also captures some of the essence of Stine’s renowned books. The film managed to gross over $150 million, making it worth a watch!
The protagonist of the movie, Zachary “Zach” Cooper, is played by Dylan Christopher Minnette, an actor very well known for his role of Cley Jensen in 13 Reasons Why. In both movies, he just arrives in a small town. Another funny coincidence that in both films his love interest’s name is Hannah. In Goosebumps played by Odeya Rush and in 13 Reasons Why by Katherine Langford. Yes, we think they kinda look alike too. Do you?
