Happy Death Day

Happy Death Day is one of those movies that I remember having a smile on my face the whole time I was watching it. I love this movie so much that every time I watch it I have a great time! It is a comedy horror/slasher movie and one of the best to come out in the last decade or so. I have probably seen this movie nearly ten times and it only came out in 2017!

The Movie Review

I love this movie so much that last year our cinema was playing older movies during Halloween and this was one of them. Despite seeing it when it first came out and having it on 4K, I still had to pay to see it in the theatre again. So yeah, Happy Death Day is awesome!

A Time-Looping Tale

The movie is basically a time loop. We have our main character, a college student called Tree, and at first, you think she is a typical “hot girl” stuck up, mean, and just interested in her own stuff. However, Tree is a very well-written and interesting character and there are reasons for her being the way that she is.

A Mystery

She wakes up on her birthday in the bed of this guy called Carter, a guy that she would never normally interact with. However, before she can get over her night of partying, she ends up killed by someone wearing a creepy mask. She wakes up again in Carter’s room and after getting killed once more, she realizes that she is stuck in a time loop.

Twists and Fun

Tree confides in Carter what is going on and they work together to try and solve the loop, even though Carter forgets everything each time the loop resets. We have two mysteries going on in this movie. One is Tree trying to find out who the killer is and the other is her trying to figure out how to stop the loop.

Depth Beneath

Happy Death Day is just a whole lot of fun and usually, when a movie has a mystery about it, you find it not as enjoyable when you know all the twists. However, this is the exception to that rule, I already know everything that is going to happen each time I watch this, but I still have a great time.

A Film with Heart

While on the surface this is just a very fun movie that has a great and dark sense of humor and some pretty brutal deaths too, I do think that there is a bit of depth here, as I said, Tree goes through some stuff and it is great to see her become a better person as a result of going through what she does in the movie.

Special Features and Future Hopes

The 4K (and the Blu-Ray) releases are great as they have a fun commentary track from director Christopher Landon and Tree, Jessica Rothe which is fun. However, I do wish that they packed this thing with more special features as it is kind of lacking in that regard. Although I am sure if they do another release with more content, I will end up buying it!

A Must-Watch Experience

You have to watch Happy Death Day. Before it came out, I heard it referred to as Groundhog Day meets Scream and that is really the best way to look at this. This is just a super fun time and I have loved writing about it today, so much so that I think I am going to watch this and its sequel Happy Death Day 2U this weekend!
