Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2: the Plot
Deathly Hallows Part 2 continues the story as Harry Potter and the gang try to search for the remaining Horcruxes. They break into Bellatrix Lestrange’s vault where they find out that two of the wands taken from Malfoy Manor belonged to Bellatrix and to Draco Malfoy. At the same time, it is also revealed that another horcrux is in the form of Helga Hufflepuff’s cup.
Meanwhile, at Hogwarts, Severus Snape informs students and staff of the punishment they will face if they side with Harry. Harry then confronts Snape who manages to escape after Minerva McGonagall challenges him to a duel. At the same time, Hermione destroys the horcrux cup whereas it is revealed to Harry that Voldemort performed dark magic on her mother’s diadem.
The trio then head over to Room of Requirements where her mother’s diadem is placed to destroy it, saving Malfoy and Zabini in the process as well. Harry receives a vision which shows how Voldemort’s snake Nagini is the final horcrux.
On the other end, Voldemort kills Snape after explaining how the elder wand cannot serve Voldemort unless he is to be killed. Harry inherits Snape’s memories displaying how in reality, he was trying to save Harry the whole time and that Albus Dumbledore had actually instructed Snape to kill him. Harry confronts Voldemort and after initially giving up on himself, Harry returns and kills Voldemort using his own curse spell. The film ends with Harry, Ginny, Ron, Hermione, and Draco watching as their kids leave for Hogwarts at King’s Cross Station 19 years later.
The Production of the Film
With the series coming to a close, the filmmakers had a huge responsibility to end the story in a satisfying fashion. One of the main aspects of the film that had to be focused majorly was implying the animation and graphics. Talking about this topic, in particular, visual effects supervisor Tim Burke claimed that one of the most difficult challenges the team faced was staging the Battle of Hogwarts.
Burke explained how, in order to make that possible, the team took shots with complex camera linking moves from wide overviews. The school itself was also digitally rebuilt from scratch using the 2008 model by the visual effects company, Double Negative. The film also had added 3D effects which were created after capturing over 300 shots in 3D.
Coming over to the film’s theme song, Alexandre Desplat was contacted once again to make a comeback after composing the score for the first film as well. Desplat claimed how composing the film’s score was a huge responsibility and a great challenge that required a great deal of time and focus. The soundtrack for the film was nominated for Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media at the 54th Annual Grammy Awards.
Overall, the Deathly Hallows Part 2 is considered one of the all-time greatest finishes to a movie series. After a long journey for both the fans and the cast, the series was laid to rest in the most perfect manner. The film itself became an absolute hit by grossing over $1.3 billion on the box office.
