The Film Review
Released on 28th June 2007, the film is directed by David Yates and features a cast consisting of Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, Rupert Grint, Helena Bonham Carter, Alan Rickman, Warwick Davis, Michael Gambon, and Maggie Smith. The film begins as we get to see Harry initially expelled from Hogwarts due to using magic outside of the wizarding world.
Although the decision is reversed, Harry is taken to Sirius Black’s house where he discovers a secret faction named the Order of the Phoenix, formed by Albus Dumbledore himself. The faction informs Harry how the Ministry of Magic is oblivious to Lord Voldemort’s return.
Meanwhile, the Minister of Magic Cornelius Fudge appoints a new Defence Against The Arts teacher named Dolores Umbridge who instantly begins to despise Harry and tortures him by making him write a message with a magic quill. Harry, Ron, and Hermione form a secret group named Dumbledore’s Army to train students in defensive spells, but the group is soon exposed by Umbridge, thereby forcing Dumbledore himself to go into exile to prevent himself from being arrested.
On the other end, Harry’s vision which is linked to Voldemort leads him to unveil a bottled prophecy, which Voldemort was after. Harry is ambushed by Death Eaters and although the rest of Dumbledore’s Army comes to help him, they are all taken hostage by Voldemort. The Order of the Phoenix arrives as well but fails to make a difference, thereby leading to the death of Black.
As soon as Voldemort is about to kill Harry, Dumbledore appears, and the prophecy is destroyed in between the battle. Fudge is shamefully kicked out of his position, Umbridge is removed from Hogwarts, and Dumbledore returns as the headmaster.
Unlike previous films, the Order of the Phoenix was full of political conspiracies and abuse of power and for this reason, David Yates was chosen as the director. Yates, who is a veteran at directing intense political films, stated that the film consisted of 1400 visual effect shots, and over 950 of them were produced by the company Double Negative. The company took the VFX lead for the first time throughout the series. It was also responsible for sequences in the Room of Requirements, Forbidden Forest, Hall of Prophecies, and the Death Chamber. In addition to all that, the character of Grawp was also the result of the Soul Capturing technology, which used the movements and facial expressions Tom Maudsley instead of designing it from scratch, saving both time and expenses.
The main score of this film was composed by Nicholas Hooper who, although new to the franchise, had previously worked with Yates in different films. Hooper basically integrated his score into Hedwig’s theme, making it a variation of the original one by John Williams.
Order of the Phoenix became a hit from the very first day of its release. By now, the Harry Potter franchise had already become world famous and just the name was enough to attract fans from all around the world to view the film. The film grossed over $939 million on the box office, making it the 47th highest grossing film of all time.
