The Film Review
Released on 4th November 2001, the film starts when Albus Dumbledore, along with Minerva McGonagall, Rubeus Hagrid and other professors at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry deliver an orphan named Harry Potter to his only living relatives, the Dursleys.
Ten years later, Harry Potter receives a letter from Hogwarts confirming his admission into the school. Hagrid takes Harry to buy his supplies where he reveals how both his parents died at the hands of an evil powerful wizard known as Lord Voldemort. While on his journey to Hogwarts, Harry meets Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley who he becomes good friends with. Harry also encounters an arrogant Draco Malfoy who later on becomes his ultimate rival.
As they arrive at Hogwarts, Harry, Ron, and Hermione all end up being placed in house Gryffindor where they are in competition with three other houses known as Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, and Slytherin. Harry begins learning magic and wizardry but soon discovers that a powerful object called the Philosopher’s Stone is being hunted by, who he assumed, his potion teacher, Severus Snape. Much to Harry’s surprise, it turns out that the one trying to obtain the stone was his Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher, Professor Quirrell who planned to use it to bring back Voldemort into his original form.
Voldemort’s spirit tries to convince Harry to hand over the stone to him but after he refuses, Harry is attacked by Quirrel who turns to dust after touching him. Voldemort’s spirit passes through Harry, causing him to faint. The film ends with Harry waking up at the hospital, finding out that due to his heroics, Gryffindor had won the House Cup.
Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s stone was the first of many Harry Potter films that became a universal standard for films to follow. In order to keep the film in sync with the book, Columbus constantly kept in contact with the original novel writer, J. K. Rowling. Columbus wanted to make sure that all the minimal details of the novel were correctly emulated in the film so for that reason, a very precise cast was chosen to fit the characters as to how they were defined in the books.
As for the visual effects, there were almost 600 special effects shots that involved numerous companies including Industrial Light & Magic, Rhythm & Hues, and Sony Pictures. Columbus had planned to use both CGI and animatronics to create the science fictional creatures including Fluffy.
The main theme song for this film was composed by John Williams. One of his main themes, Hedwig’s Theme, was retained throughout the Harry Potter series due to its popularity and increasing demand.
In short, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone was the first of many films that simply stole the hearts of all its audiences. The movie was the beginning of an iconic series that, to this day, is considered one of the all-time greats.
