I was very excited to see Here. I love the work of Robert Zemeckis, even if you take the Back to the Future trilogy out of his portfolio, he has been behind the camera for so many great movies. Plus, his work with Tom Hanks in the past has been fantastic so I saw no reason for Here not to be another great movie in his career.

The Movie Review
A Star-Studded Cast and Intriguing Concept
Not only is this directed and written by Robert Zemeckis, Here has an amazing cast, Tom Hanks and Robin Wright being together again over 30 years since Forrest Gump came out sounded awesome. However, the movie also has a great supporting cast, actually, I would say that this is more of an “ensemble cast” kind of movie as there are so many notable actors here.
I saw the trailer for Here and the idea of going through time and how this piece of land which became a house was so important over the years sounded like a great idea. Also, the fact that the movie is based on a popular graphic novel also gave me very high hopes that this could be something special.
What Went Wrong with Here
Sadly, Here is one of the worst movies I have seen in a theatre this year…. Maybe I am being a bit harsh, let’s say that the movie did not click with me. It is kind of told out of order as we see this family and the triumphs and tragedies and all the people who have been connected to this house since it was built. On paper and with the cast they have here and the talent they have behind the camera, this sounds like such a great movie.
However, the movie just feels flat, I did not care about any of these characters and I felt that the movie was very manipulative with what it tried to do. It was like it was trying really hard to force me to care about these characters, but they are very one dimensional and there were times when I almost chuckled at scenes that were supposed to be serious.
The Few Bright Spots
There were some parts of the movie I liked, the dinosaurs at the start and the ice age were freaking awesome and I was like, hell yes. However, that takes mere minutes and then the drama starts. And it tries way too hard to grab you by the feels if that makes sense, I hate to use the phrase again, but emotionally manipulative is the best way to describe the tone of the movie.
One thing I will say is that Here does have a kind of cool way of transitioning scenes as it does have a kind of comic book/graphic novel look to it. However, they do overuse this and towards the end, I felt like this very cool effect had pretty much lost all of what made it special.
The Challenges of Digital De-Aging
Also, they use these digital de-aging effects to make Tom Hanks and some other cast members look younger. In the trailer, I was very impressed with the de-aging, but in the movie, it looks very weird, almost like that strange AI art that is taking over the internet, to be fair, I am sure this is a very hard effect to do, but the novelty of a young Tom Hanks very quickly wore off, especially when he would talk and it sounded like old Tom Hanks!
Final Thoughts
I so wanted to like Here and I went into it with the best of intentions, but I was kind of shocked that this movie did not last two plus hours as it certainly felt like that! The frustrating thing is that even with all my complaints, I kind of feel like I was missing something as on paper, this has so many things that I like. While I am not in a rush to watch this again as soon as it hits streaming, I am interested to see if I like it better the second time around.
