The Film Review
The film is the first of the three installments in the Hotel Transylvania franchise (the other being Hotel Transylvania 2 and Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation). Released on 8th September 2012, Hotel Transylvania takes its viewers into a world full of monsters who, in order to seek refuge from humans, stay at a five-star monsters-only hotel in Transylvania which is run by a vampire called Count Dracula.
When Dracula’s daughter, Mavis, turns 118, Dracula let’s her visit the human world but at the same time, plans to scare her into coming back to the hotel before she could go far. The plan works as Mavis returns back to the hotel but much to Dracula’s surprise, a 21-year-old human named Johnny also arrives at the hotel mistakenly.
Dracula tries to get rid of Johnny from the hotel but Mavis falls in love with him. Dracula then takes Johnny to his headquarters where he tells him how he lost his wife due to human tyranny. Johnny decides to leave and as soon as Mavis kisses him, he forcefully rejects her against his own will and then leaves after the monsters find out how he is a human.
Dracula, after finding out about his wife’s gift to Mavis which talked about the story of how they fell in love, decides to bring back Johnny. Dracula and the gang head for the airport and succeed in bringing back Johnny from the plane. The film ends with Johnny and Mavis kissing as the rest of the monsters celebrate.
Genndy Tartakovsky was the sixth scheduled director for the film, Hotel Transylvania. Despite coming from a background that was also related to animation, Tartakovsky explained that the protocol for this film was completely different compared to what he had worked on in his previous projects. Further explaining, Tartakovsky believed that the biggest challenge he had to face was working with computer graphics as he had no idea how to cope up with the latest technology, nor did he have any previous fruitful experiences while working with them. The film, at one point, had 80 animators working on it.
Despite featuring a cast that basically defines the comedy genre in Hollywood, Hotel Transylvania has somewhat been criticized for being unfunny and unimaginative. Critics have argued that Tartakovsky, the producer of everyone’s favorite cartoon show called Dexter’s Laboratory, has failed to shift and imply his creative magic on to 3D animated movies. In addition to that, fans have also complained about how the animation relatively seemed ordinary compared to other films of the same type.
Overall, the film has been a commercial success as it grossed over $358 million. The film was also nominated at the Annie and Golden Globe Awards for Best Animated Feature. The film is funny and friendly, combined with the element of being family-friendly, makes it definitely worth a watch.
