The Film Review

The Plot

Released officially on 19th June 2016, Collision Course brings together the original Ice Age gang as they are now challenged by destructive asteroids that are heading directly towards Earth due to Scrat accidentally activating an abandoned alien ship.

Meanwhile on Earth, Manny and Ellie prepare for Peaches and her fiancé’s wedding. Buck returns dinosaur eggs to its owner after being stolen by flying dromaeosaurs named Gavin, Gertie, and Roger.

The Ice Age gang soon discovers the threat of the asteroids after being almost wiped out by one. It is revealed that the clue to stop the asteroids lies in the area where they had previously struck on Earth.

At the same time, the dromaeosaurs unsuccessfully try to stop Buck and the rest from going there as part of their revenge. The gang reaches the crash site where they discover Geotopia – a society consisting of immortal youthful animals.

The herd discovers how the magnetic properties within the asteroids can be used to repel them away from the Earth. However, the leader of Geotopia, Shangri Llama, refuses to help by not allowing them to send their city’s crystals into orbit.

Sid falls in love with one of the immortal female sloths called Brooke and in an attempt to impress her, he inadvertently destroys the entire city.

As a result, Geotopia’s eternal youth becomes shattered and all the animals return to their original elderly selves. Regardless, Brooke manages to convince everyone – including the dromaeosaurs

– to help them steer off the asteroids, to which they eventually agree.

Consequently, the plan is improvised and becomes a success, thereby leading asteroids to be pulled back into space. The film ends with Geotopia regaining its youthful form whereas the herd continues the wedding celebrations.

The Movie Production

Collision Course is a film that is actually inspired by the very first Ice Age film. There was a huge sign in the sense that Manny and his friends walking right passed an abandoned alien ship. The production team took this particular aspect of that film and, in turn, turned it into an entire film.

Ice Age: Collision Course: the Soundtrack

To compose the official soundtrack for the film, John Debney was hired. The film score was officially released on 19th July 2016 by Varese Sarabande.

The Movie Reception

Collision Course is one of those very rare Ice Age films that was received with extremely negative feedbacks. Despite being a commercial success on the box office, the film was harshly criticized for its lack of humor and repetitive storyline.

The Ice Age Series
Ice Age: Collision Course (2016) was preceded by the following movies:

  • Ice Age (2002),
  • Ice Age: The Meltdown (2006),
  • Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs (2009),
  • and Ice Age: Continental Drift (2012).

and it’s best to watch them in chronological order.

Additionally, the graphics quality was also criticized, and many flaws were pointed out during runtime. It managed to only receive 17% approval rate based on 116 reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. Overall, the film on a whole was deemed as unoriginal and unentertaining.
