The Movie Review
In this sequel, our heroes have a bleak outlook, as global warming threatens the land they live on. With the threat of a deadly flood looming, the group of mammals undertake another perilous yet hilarious journey.
Our story begins with the ever-hilarious squirrel named Scrat, attempting to secure his beloved acorn. As the acorn gets stuck in the cracks of an iceberg, a sudden gush of water sends it flying. Thus marks the beginning of a great flood and one that threatens to flood an entire valley full of animals.
This includes our cast of beloved characters, including Sid the Sloth (voiced by John Leguizamo), Manny the Mammoth (voiced by Ray Romano), and Diego the Tiger (voiced by Denis Leary). After the trio witness the melting ice firsthand, they (along with the entire herd of mammals) attempt to outrun the flood.
As in the previous Ice Age flick, this seemingly simple adventure is made much more hectic by a handful of characters and dangerous encounters. In addition to the forthcoming flood, the group must deal with the addition of a female mammoth named Ellie (voiced by Queen Latifah), along with her meddlesome possum “brothers”.
By forming a pack and setting off on their trek together, the crew hopes to remain safe and ensure their species’ survival. However, the path ahead is littered with fearsome foes, including scavenging vultures, crazy cult worshippers, and unknown aquatic predators.
Although Ice Age: The Meltdown has a consistent feeling of danger, the movie is just as funny as its predecessor, if not funnier. The main story is broken up into a few entertaining sub-plots, a few of which have wholesome and valuable life lessons attached.
We also get to follow Scrat on his continuously hilarious journey to secure the acorn, as the movie occasionally cuts to brief slap-stick scenes featuring the squirrel. Overall, there’s a great mixture of physical comedy and witty jokes, making Ice Age: The Meltdown a well-rounded flick full of laughs.
Even if you haven’t seen the original Ice Age movie, Ice Age: The Meltdown is still definitely worth checking out. The lighthearted humor is mixed well with a persistent feeling of peril, pushing our main cast through countless entertaining scenarios.
The visuals have vastly improved as well, making this sequel a far more aesthetically pleasing watch. This is especially noticeable in the animal fur and water physics, which are exceptionally well done. Ice Age: The Meltdown is a great animated comedy that’s a surefire success for your next family movie night.
