Jaws 3-D

Jaws is an all time classic and to be fair, Jaws 2 while nowhere near as good as the original, is still a damn fine shark movie. Jaws 3-D on the other hand is just pure dumb fun and while certainly inferior to what came before it, I always have a fun time watching this. I also love how this had the 3D gimmick of those classic red and blue (or was it green?) glasses, I would have loved to have seen this in the theatre back in 1983.

The Movie Review

I always think that it is harsh when people say that Jaws 3-D is a bad movie as it really is not horrible. This is a sequel to Jaws 2, but this time the movie is set in SeaWorld in Florida. I love the setting of this movie and I was a weird kid in that I always dreamed of being in a water park type place like this…. While being chased by sharks. I greatly overestimated my swimming and survival skills as an 8 year old that is for sure.

Mike Brody from the first movie is all grown up and played by Dennis Quaid (G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, The Substance). Mike is working as an engineer at SeaWorld and has a girlfriend called Kay and they take the aquatic creatures very seriously. Mike’s brother, Sean has come for a visit and as he is still not all that great after what happened to him in the previous movies, he could not have picked a worse time to come visit his brother.

You see, a baby great white shark which is still an impressive 10 feet in size has made its way into SeaWorld! People start to die, but it is realized that this baby great white shark has a giant mother and she has somehow managed to get into SeaWorld too! The stuff in the water tunnels in Jaws 3-D is awesome, it is so much fun and easily the highlight of the movie.

Jaws 3-D’s Thrilling and Cheesy Moments

Things get pretty bad as you would expect. This giant great white shark freaks out, causes a ton of damage and of course, these underwater tunnels start to flood… with people inside them. Like the jerk mayor from the previous movies, there is a jerk park manager who wants to exploit the shark to make money for SeaWorld by using it as an attraction.

At the end of the day, there is some really dumb stuff happening in Jaws 3-D and you certainly have to suspend your disbelief. I think the trouble that this movie has is that it has the Jaws name so it is impossible not to compare it to what came before it. On its own and if it was called something else, this would probably be much more fondly thought of.

Final Thoughts on Jaws 3-D

You can never go wrong with a Jaws marathon in my humble opinion and I always get a kick out of Jaws 3-D. I feel that the SeaWorld setting of this movie is what makes it so much fun. I can see why this is not for some people, but if you are looking for a fun shark movie, there are way, way worse ones than this out there. I really do need to pick this up in 4K at some point!
