Jaws: The Revenge

My God, does the saying “going back to the well one time too many” fit Jaws: The Revenge perfectly! Say what you will about Jaws 3D, but the water park setting has always been something I found fun about that movie, even if it is vastly inferior to Jaws and even Jaws 2, Jaws: The Revenge though is straight up trash! However, I will say that it is a, so bad it is kind of good and fun to watch kind of movie.

The Movie Review – Ignoring Jaws 3D Completely

One of the weirder things about this movie is that it ignores completely what happened in Jaws 3D. I read that during the promotion of this movie, they went as far as to refer to it as the third Jaws movie! It is kind of funny to look back on this now as I too like to think there is just three Jaws movies, only I choose to ignore this one!

This time, we are back on Amity Island and Martin Brody is dead and his widow, Ellen struggles to live with what happened. Sean now works as a cop on the island and after investigating a bit of driftwood, Sean ends up killed by a shark. Not just any shark, this shark is from the same family as the original sharks that Brody family have tangled with.

This Time, It’s Personal… And Ridiculous

The tag line for this movie was “This Time It’s Personal” and that is not just a gimmick. Ellen is convinced that her family is being stalked by this shark for revenge…. Yeah, that is actually what the plot of this movie is about. Michael Brody now works as a marine biologist in the Bahamas and he and his wife convince Ellen to come back to the Bahamas with them.

Jaws: The Revenge – A Shark with a Vendetta

Well, Ellen is still sure that the shark is after them, and guess what…. She is right! Somehow this shark manages to track them from Amity Island to the Bahamas. Oh, it gets weirder than that. You see, it is implied that Elen has some kind of supernatural ability that she can sense when the shark is close to one of her family members.

As I said, this is so bad, it is good! The acting, even with actors like Michael Caine and the very underrated Mario Van Peebles is so freaking laughable, I do not know how people were able to keep a straight face. The shark looks terrible, I would say this is easily the worst looking of all the Jaws movies, it has a very cheap and low-budget look to it and the final explosion is one of the worst things the franchise has to offer.

Why Jaws: The Revenge Killed the Franchise

It is easy to see why the Jaws franchise pretty much died with Jaws: The Revenge. Thankfully, the first movie was so good, that its legacy does live on and this has not tarnished that original movie. This is a very bad movie, but it is a movie that does make me laugh due to how bad it is. Still, while I would check it out and stop for a while if I was flicking through the channels and it was on. I could never see myself going out of my way to actually make an effort to watch this.
