Jupiter Ascending is a downloadable space opera film produced by Village Roadshow Pictures, RatPac-Dune Entertainment, and Anarchos Productions. The film is directed by The Wachowskis as it features a cast consisting of Channing Tatum, Mila Kunis, Sean Bean, Eddie Redmayne, and Douglas Booth.

The Film Review
Jupiter Ascending starts off with a narration that describes how countless planets including Earth were established by alien royalty for the purpose of inheriting their respective organisms. After the death of the matriarch of the House of Abrasax – one of the most powerful alien families – an argument takes place between her children namely Balem, Kalique, and Titus.
The three children end up with different inheritance. Meanwhile, on Earth, Jupiter is a poor human girl whose father died in a robbery. In order to buy a telescope, Jupiter plans on selling her egg cells but is suddenly attacked by extraterrestrial Keepers.
She is saved by Caine Wise, a former soldier sent by Titus to bring her to him. On their way, the Keepers attack them once again, but Caine manages to fend them off. It is revealed that the keepers had been working under Balem. Caine takes Jupiter to a hideout owned by Stinger Apini who is another former soldier.
The two begin to help her escape but she is once again captured, this time by Kalique’s bribed soldiers. Jupiter meets Kalique to reveals that she is the rightful heir to the Matriarch due to her matching personality with her.
Jupiter then travels to the location of the transfer of inheritance but is forced to turn back after news of her family being kidnapped by Balem’s accomplice Greeghan.
At the same time, Titan’s henchman captures both Caine and Jupiter and explains how he intends to marry Jupiter and then kill her to gain the inheritance. Cain gets thrown out in space but manages to survive and save Jupiter just before the marriage ritual occurs.
The two then travel to Balem’s refinery where an action sequence takes place consequently killing Balem in the process. Jupiter’s family is saved, and everyone returns home where she manages to live the rest of her life like an ordinary girl, keeping her royalty to herself.
The Movie Production
One of the main features of the film was how it majorly relied on practical stunts rather than being dependant on CGI. According to Channing Tatum, most of the stunts were performed by either the actors themselves or the stuntmen.
Particularly in the scene where Tatum’s character flies using antigravity boots, a rig of six cameras was positioned at different angles by mounting them on a real helicopter. Framestore, the company that mostly worked on the visual effects, used Vicon T40 cameras for motion capture purposes.
Jupiter Ascending: the Movie Score
To compose the film’s official score, the veteran and talented Michael Giacchino was contacted. Giacchino claimed that they had produced and composed the film’s original score even before the production of the film had been completed.
The Bottom Line
In a general sense, Jupiter Ascending was received with mixed reviews from its viewers. Where the film was praised for its acting and stunting skills, it was also heavily criticized for its overuse of visual effects. It managed to gross over $184 million, barely able to make a profit as the production itself cost the companies approximately $176 million.
