The Film Review
Released on 9th June 1993, Jurassic Park was the first installment in the Jurassic Park Franchise and is based on a novel of the same name.
The story is set around an island called Isla Nublar where a renowned philanthropist, John Hammond, and his team have managed to create a theme park consisting of real dinosaurs. After finding out that one of the dinosaur handlers have been killed by a Velociraptor, Hammond and his associates go into the park to figure out and correct the bugs in the system. Little did Hammond know, Jurassic Park’s main computer engineer, Dennis Nedry, had been bribed by Hammond’s competitors and in turn, Nedry was trying to gain access to the park’s resources which turned off the security procedures, leaving Hammond and his team defenseless against the likes of numerous wild dinosaurs.
Chaos occurs as Nedry himself gets devoured by one of the dinosaurs. The story focuses on Hammond and his group trying to survive and escape from the dinosaurs as they discover a mystery that they never imagined would be possible.
Jurassic Park is a movie which is considered to be the first of its kind. Before filming could begin, developers and producers had to work hard on the pre-production process for around 25 months. Surprisingly, the visual effects used only lasted for about 14 minutes out of the whole movie. According to one of the main animators of the film, Steve Williams, the animators had to begin from scratch by drawing models of dinosaurs on paper initially.
Williams further went on to explain the steps of producing the dinosaurs which included scanning models of dinosaur exhibits in different museums and reconstructing the dinosaur data and its features to make it customizable on the computers.
A software called SoftImage 3D was used for the placement and movement of the dinosaurs digitally. Another software called Viewpaint was used to create and paint the texture of the dinosaur in layers through which, the dinosaurs managed to get their skins attached to their structures.
Finally, separate images were combined together in a specific way to make the dinosaurs seem lifelike to its viewers on the big screen. William revealed that a particular scene which involved a tyrannosaurus rex breaking through a huge log consisted of 75 frames joined together.
Jurassic Park became the highest grossing firm worldwide when it was released. The film managed to win three Oscar awards for Best Sound Editing, Best Sound Mixing, and Best Visual Effects. The music of the film was composed by John Williams whereas, John Neufeld and Alexander Courage proved the theme’s orchestration.
Jurassic Park laid the foundation of future sequels. The film itself is considered to be the greatest action film of all times and the franchise has gone up to become one of the most popular around the world.
