Kong: Skull Island

Kong: Skull Island was a movie that started off as a reboot of the King Kong franchise, which it still is. However, it eventually would make its way over to the folks at Warner Bros where it would become part of what has become known as The Monsterverse!

The Film Review

The cast of Kong: Skull Island is stacked. Tom Hiddleston, Samuel L Jackson, Brie Larson, John Goodman, and John C Riley are just some of the talent that is on hand to bring Kong’s latest tale to life. The movie is directed by Jordan Vogt-Roberts and I think that he does a great job in not just telling a good Kong story, but setting up what is to come.

The story of Kong is set in the 1970’s all about getting to Skull Island an island which has just been discovered. A US and British team head to Skull Island to “explore” and chart the island. James Conrad played by Tom Hiddleston and Mason Weaver basically serve as the movies “good guys” while Samuel L Jackson’s, Preston Packard clearly has some issues going on.

The truth comes out as to why this team was sent to Skull Island and it was not just to go and explore. It is revealed that this island is home to monsters and one of those monsters is Kong. One thing that Skull Island does very well is to explain a bit of Kong’s back story. You learn why he is the last of his kind and why the natives treat him like he is a god.

The “research” team are there to capture Kong and bring him back. However part of their brilliant plan was them dropping explosive charges on the island and these charges brought these other monsters known as Skullcrawlers back to the surface of the island. These things are nasty and will kill anything in their path.

It goes without saying that the special effects in Kong: Skull Island are tremendous. Kong himself looks fantastic and the whole of Skull Island is so well done that it makes you wish they would explore every nook and cranny of it. Without a doubt, the fight scenes between Kong and the Skullcrawlers are a major highlight of the movie.

While I would class the movie as an action movie. I do think that there is a lot of heart here. John C Riley’s character, for example, provides some funny and weird comic relief that works very well. It is a movie that has a little bit of something for everyone and it is the kind of movie where you can just kick back and have a great time while you are watching it.

Not only is Kong: Skull Island a really fun movie in its own right, it is also the second of what we know will be at least four movies of this Monsterverse that Warner Bros have created. Godzilla was the first, Skull Island was second, 2019 will see Godzilla King of the Monsters released. Then in 2020, we have Godzilla vs King Kong!

Kong: Skull Island is a very easy movie to recommend. It is a fun time, it has a lot of action, some great special effects and Kong himself is a really awesome character. I had a fun time watching this and it just flew past as there was always something going on.
