KPop Demon Hunters has to be up there as the surprise hit of the year! This is a Netflix Original, and so far, it is the most-streamed Netflix Original movie they have made so far! This musical anime adventure movie well and truly captured the attention of hundreds of millions of people all over the world. Netflix well and truly have a monster hit on its hands here, and there are plans to greatly expand this.

KPop Demon Hunters Movie Review: A Genre-Blending Adventure
Even though I had heard nothing but good things about this, it took me a while to get around to watching it. Hey, I love anime and stuff about demons and monsters, but K-pop is not my thing at all. For those that love it, more power to you, and you do you and be happy doing it. However, this kind of music has never clicked with me, and that is what put me off watching the movie for so long.
My teenage son, though, he freaking loved this, watched it multiple times, and constantly told me I needed to watch it, so I did. The story is pretty interesting in that demons led by a ruler called Gwi-Ma had been feasting on human souls for many years, until three demon hunters managed to seal the demons away with a musical seal called The Honmoon. This premise got me pretty interested right from the start, and the movie does start with a bang.
Meet the Demon-Hunting KPop Group: Huntr/X
Each generation, three young women will rise up and become that generation’s demon hunters to keep the demons at bay. In the modern day, our demon hunters are made up of Rumi, Mira, and Zoey, and they are also a K-pop group called Huntr/X. They are organized by a woman called Celine, who was one of the previous demon hunters, and she is the one who raised Rumi. Let me tell you, Rumi is by far the star and the most interesting of this trio. Her story and what her origins were really interested me.
The Villainous Twist: Saja Boys and Their Sinister Mission
Well, Gwi-Ma is sick of the way things are with demons, and they create a rival K-pop boy band called the Saja Boys with the intent of stealing the fans of Huntr/X and making their Hanmoon much weaker. Hey, as a premise, this is cool, and like the trio of girls, the boys have one standout character in Jinu, who used to be a human but basically sold his soul.
Stunning Animation and a Divisive Soundtrack
The story here is actually fantastic, and while I think some of the characters do not get the same amount of attention or development, our trio of heroines, for the most part, do all get their moments to shine. There is a lot of flashy action, and the quality of the animation in general is just fantastic. This was produced by Sony Animation, and I swear that studio gets nowhere near the credit it deserves for how fantastic their animated movies always look.
While there was a lot about the movie that I liked, much like I thought it would, the K-pop soundtrack was like nails on a chalkboard for me. Not all of it, but there were certainly some parts that I really did not like, and it was honestly taking me out of the movie. To be fair, this is a ridiculous thing for me to complain about, as K-pop is in the freaking title, so I knew what I was getting into. What I can say about the music is that, from what I have heard, people who are into this kind of music think that it is very good.
What’s Next for KPop Demon Hunters?
Netflix struck gold with KPop Demon Hunters, and they have massive plans for this. There is going to be a series, sequels, a live stage show, and there is even rumors of a live action adaptation as well! I can see why so many people loved this movie, and while I would not say that I loved it, I did like it a lot more than I thought I would. Please note that the score I gave the music is purely based on my not being into this kind of music; again, people who like it seem to love it.
