Most of the negative response to Life in a Year that I have come across has been in regards to the involvement of the “Smith” family. I think that is pretty harsh as Life in a Year is a decent romantic drama with some very impressive performances, including a great one from Jaden Smith.

The Movie Review
I know that Jaden Smith can come across as a bit weird and he has certainly rubbed many people the wrong way, but to just dismiss a whole movie as bad because of Jaden Smith’s involvement is kind of nuts to me. Granted, if you just do not like him do not watch it, but he knocks this role out of the park and is honestly one of the highlights of the movie.
The plot of Life in a Year is about as predictable as they come, but it still tugs on the heartstrings and will make you care about the character. It is about a young man called Daryn (Jaden Smith) who has a good life ahead of him, he is on his way to Harvard, and on paper, he has it all made.
However, he meets a young woman called Isabelle (Cara Delevingne) and pretty much falls in love with her right away. The thing is, Isabelle has cancer and it is very, very aggressive. Still, Daryn falls in love with Isabelle and decides that they will try to live a whole life in just a year! It is a very grand romantic gesture and he is willing to put his life on hold to do this.
The twist in Life in a Year is that Daryn, despite having his life mapped out for him by his dad Xavier (Cuba Gooding Jr), has dreams of being a musician and he is a really good rapper. Isabelle really encourages Daryn to pursue his dreams and she helps him with his goal all the while the two of them are getting closer and closer.
As I said, it is about as predictable as they come, but I do think the whole “musician” thing does add a bit more to the movie. A huge part of the reason the movie works is because of the chemistry between Jaden Smith and Cara Delevingne. I am a huge fan of Cara Delevingne, I honestly think she could be cast in any role and she would do a fantastic job.
I do also have to say that the father and son dynamic between Daryn and Xavier is really well done too. Cuba Gooding Jr is such a good actor and I like it when he gets to do these kinds of dramatic roles. The movie is very sad, but it does also have a lot of heart and hope as well.
If you are in the mood for a drama that may make you tear up, you can do way, way worse than Life in a Year. I watched this with my wife and we were both entertained and thought that it was a good watch. If you like romantic dramas, I really do not see you not liking what this movie is offering.
