Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome

There aren’t going to be many films from the 1980s that you can watch today, and feel as if they’ve aged well. For example, Star Wars – Episode IV: A New Hope is a phenomenal film when you reminisce, but when you watch it in 2023, you can feel that it has become severely outdated. However, when looking back at George Miller’s Mad Max franchise, you will never feel them being outdated at any moment while you watching them, and Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome is the finest example of why!

The Movie Review

Max finds himself in Bartertown, a city run by the ruthless Aunty Entity. In Bartertown, everything has a price. Max’s first encounter with Aunty Entity doesn’t go great, and he quickly finds himself banished to the desert. Lost and alone, Max stumbles upon a group of children living in a remote oasis.

These children have been left to fend for themselves and have created their own society, where they worship an airplane wreck as a symbol of hope.

When Max realizes that the children are in danger, he becomes their protector and sets out to help them find a way out of the desert. But things are never that simple in this harsh world, and Max soon finds himself caught up in a web of treachery and deception. He must use all of his survival skills and cunning to overcome the dangers that lie ahead and ensure the safety of the children.

Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome is a post-apocalyptic action film directed by George Miller and George Ogilvie, starring Mel Gibson as the titular character, alongside Tina Turner as the antagonist Aunty Entity.

The film offers a unique blend of dystopian and Western genres and despite being released in 1985, it still holds up well both visually and thematically. There is constantly a perfect balance of action, adventure, and drama, with each scene being incredibly well-paced and directed. There is always a steady increase in tension throughout, leading to a satisfying climax.

The Characters

Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome boasts a script that is as sturdy as the metal frames that make up the dystopian landscape of the film. Character development is not a mere afterthought; it is a key component that adds depth to the film that is both impressive and moving.

The dialogue has a distinctive flavor that only serves to enhance the unique setting, it is quick-witted and intense, like a battle of wits in a post-apocalyptic gladiator ring. However, it is the interactions between Max and the children that are the true jewels of the film’s dialogue. The dialogue here is akin to the growth of a human connection in the midst of all the chaos of this world.

This is the third film in the series, and by this point, Mel Gibson was very well accustomed to the character of Max. Max is the gritty anti-hero we all need in a world gone mad, and Gibson’s portrayal of him is nothing short of iconic.

Tina Turner is equally impressive as Aunty Entity, the enigmatic ruler of Bartertown, who is as dangerous as she is beautiful. Her presence on screen is commanding, with a smoldering intensity that leaves a lasting impression.

The child actors in the film, while fantastic in many regards, do have some flaws in their acting abilities. Despite their lack of experience, the children deliver nuanced performances that add a layer of emotional depth to the film’s themes of hope and sacrifice.

The Action and the Visuals

The action scenes are well-choreographed, with a perfect blend of practical effects and stunts. The film’s signature action sequence in Thunderdome is particularly memorable, showcasing the ingenuity of Max as he fights for survival against Blaster.

The stunt work in the film is impressive, with high-speed car chases and death-defying jumps that keep you on the edge of your seat. To add more immersion here, the film’s visuals are just as impressive, with stunning practical effects and set designs that make the action feel even better.

The barren desert landscape, the colorful characters, and the impressive vehicle designs all come together to create a visually striking film. The use of Computer Animation is almost non-existent, with the practical effects taking center stage. The result is a film that feels authentic and immersive, adding to the overall impact.

Sound & Music

The soundtrack of Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome, composed by Maurice Jarre, is a masterpiece that perfectly complements the film’s gritty and dystopian world.

The music seamlessly blends elements of rock, country, and blues, evoking a sense of rebellion and resilience that is synonymous with the film’s themes. The use of music throughout the film is also incredibly effective, adding a layer of emotional depth to the already intense action scenes.

With tracks like “We Don’t Need Another Hero” by Tina Turner, which has become an iconic song of the 1980s, and “One of the Living” by Bartertown’s band, the soundtrack is a sonic journey that transports the viewer to the post-apocalyptic world of Mad Max.

Verdict

In a world where hope is a rare commodity, Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome is a story of perseverance and sacrifice, of finding courage in the most unlikely of places, and of standing up for what’s right even in the darkest of times.

With its captivating blend of genres, unforgettable characters, and pulse-pounding action, Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome is a film that will leave you breathless from start to finish.
