The Film Review
Mamma Mia! brings us the story of a young 20-year-old girl named Sophie Sheridan who is about to get married. Sophie reveals to her bridesmaids that she has invited three men named Bill Anderson, Sam Carmichael, and Harry Bright, out of which whom she believes one of them could be her father. Sophie’s mother, Donna, finds out and explains to her former bandmates, Rosie and Tanya, that she indeed does not know who Sophie’s father is.
Meanwhile, Bill reveals to Sophie that the villa she lives in was a result of her mother Donna receiving money from his great-aunt Sofia. Consequently, Sophie asks Bill to give her away at her wedding, but Sam and Harry confront her and reveal that they are her father. Tensed by the situation, Sophie faints. The next day, Donna confronts Sophie and accuses her of trying to avoid marriage. An argument takes place between the mother and daughter but eventually, Donna reveals she truly does not know who her father is amongst the three men.
In the midst of everything, Sam also reveals that he wanted to marry Donna even after leaving her but when he returned, she was already seeing another man. The movie ends as all three men decide to be considered as one-third of a father to Sophie. Sam proposes to Donna which she accepts. Sam and Donna also get married, whereas Sophie and her fiancée, Sky, sail away.
Mamma Mia! is one of those romcom films that simply makes the audience go aw. British director Phyllida Lloyd does a wonderful job in opening up the film with a pleasant tone, giving the vibes that this is simply nothing more than a light family film. Supporting Lloyd in his skills is the beautiful Meryl Streep who is arguably the main factor as to why the film became a hit. Streep’s performance as a single independent mother is remarkable. Viewers also get to realize how apart from acting, Streep is a gifted dancer and vocalist who does a remarkable job in lighting up the film through her show-stopping dance performances.
Streep is also an inspiration to all those single mothers who struggle in life as Streep’s character, Donna, is a successful woman both in terms of lifestyle and finances. Hence, it’s a lesson as to how nothing can stop people’s dreams from coming true.
Being a musical as well, Mamma Mia! The Movie Soundtrack album was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Compilation Soundtrack Album for Motion Pictures. The album features performances from the film’s own cast and was released on 8th July 2008.
Overall, Mamma Mia! is a film full of light and family-friendly comedy. The movie makes its viewers tap to the beat and make them want to sing along to the songs played. Funny and entertaining, Mamma Mia! is the perfect film to watch on a summer weekend.
