Today we are looking at a real hidden gem from the Disney vault, Mickey, Donald, Goofy: The Three Musketeers! Released in 2004, this came at a time when Disney was pumping straight to DVD (and still VHS) movies at a pretty rapid rate and I would put this one close to the very top of that list.

The Movie Review
Even to this day, I am not sure why Disney did not go all in with this and release it in theatres. The theatrical releases for animated Disney movies in 2004 were The Incredibles from Pixar and Home on the Range, I feel this could have fit in somewhere at some point in 2004 for a theatrical release.
What we have here as you will not be shocked to hear is a Disney version of the story of The Three Musketeers and it is an absolute blast. This was a firm favorite of my son when he was little and it is no exaggeration to say that he had to have watched this movie about 100 times!
I love the way that the movie is narrated as the narrator turns out to be an actual character which is a lot of fun. We see, Mickey, Donald, and Goofy as kids and they dream of being Musketeers one day. Of course, these three are not exactly the sharpest and most daring or athletic so that may be a bit of a stretch.
The trio does end up at the Musketeer’s HQ, but they work as janitors, and they still have dreams of joining the ranks. The leader of this place is Captain Pete and he constantly mocks and belittles them talking about how they are screw-ups and can’t even do their musketeer janitor jobs right!
As you would expect, Pete is really a villain and he has his eyes on the throne of France! Minnie is the Queen, and Pete sends his Beagle Boys goons out to kidnap her so he can force her to make him the King! Now, how exactly is Pete going to go about this? Well, that is where, Mickey, Donald, and Goofy come into play.
Minnie demands that she has her own special group of Musketeers to protect her and that is where Pete gets the great idea to make our trio her Musketeers as he feels like they will be easy to beat and get to Minnie. Turns out Pete’s plan was right and he kidnaps Minnie and also her friend, Daisy too!
This leads Mickey, Donald, and Goofy to go on an adventure to try and save her. We get the best out of all three characters in this movie. Mickey is brave and heroic, Goofy is a friend till the end and dumb as a rock and Donald is a coward who eventually has to become a hero and help his friends.
Mickey, Donald, Goofy: The Three Musketeers is just such fun stuff from start to end. It has action and peril and it is also very funny. There is a scene with Goofy jumping out of a window that my son would play over and over again, laughing like a maniac the whole time he was watching it.
It is not just because this is a fun movie that I feel Disney could have released this in theatres. Mickey, Donald, Goofy: The Three Musketeers is also an amazing-looking movie that has Mickey and co looking better than ever before! I really do think this could have been a big hit if Disney had more faith in it, but to be fair, it was a pretty big hit on DVD so what the heck do I know?
