I finally managed to go and see Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part 2… well, that is what it was originally called, but the title was changed to Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning and released a year later than intended. I thought that Dead Reckoning was a ton of fun, and The Final Reckoning was easily one of my most anticipated movies of the year.

The Movie Review
Final movie in the Mission: Impossible franchise
Let me tell you, for a movie, bringing a nearly 30 year running movie franchise to a close, I think that everyone involved did a fantastic job. I remember the first movie coming out and the video game tie-in that was about ten million years too late, I also have very fond memories for MI:2 and the epic Limp Bizkit and Metallica theme songs that it has. This is a series that has been a part of my life since the mid-90s, and now it has come to an end.
Will the Mission: Impossible series continue?
Well, I say that, and while Tom Cruise has gone on record saying that this is “his” last Mission: Impossible, and that it is called The Final Reckoning for a reason. This is Hollywood we are talking about here, so I would not be surprised if we got a reboot or a “Next” Reckoning. While it does bring the story to a close, there is more than enough here for them to work with if they wanted to continue the franchise without Ethan Hunt.
Plot: Ethan Hunt vs The Entity
This follows on a few months after the events of Dead Reckoning. Ethan Hunt and his team are still trying to bring the rogue AI, The Entity, to a stop before it can unleash a nuclear holocaust! The whole way that the AI spreads misinformation and twists things is very well done, and it feels very fitting for the world that we are living in today.
Villains and action in The Final Reckoning
I will say that the main villain (not the AI) that we had in Dead Reckoning is still not as fleshed out as I would have liked. Anyway, despite that being said, Mission: Impossible- The Final Reckoning is a super fun action movie. The stunts, as you would expect, are just absolutely insane and some of the craziest I have ever seen in a movie.
Best action scenes in Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning
While the main action scene that is in the trailer and it is actually on the poster is Ethan Hunt on the plane, and that is a super awesome scene. However, the scene in the submarine is one of the most incredible scenes I have seen in a movie in a very long time. It is so tense, so well shot, that it has you on the edge of your seat the whole time. Let me tell you, this is one movie that I am so glad I paid the extra bit of money to go and see on the big IMAX screen at my theatre.
Returning characters and fan service
The gang is all here, as well as a couple of new faces, and it I know it sounds cheesy, but if you love the series, you will have a great time here. They make some really cool throwbacks to past events, some pretty deep cuts here, which I thought were great. To be fair, I do think that they do a good job at the start of the movie, filling those not super familiar with the franchise in. However, I have no idea why you would watch a movie that is the “last” in a franchise that started all the way back in 1996. Yes, you can have fun and appreciate this as an action movie, but many things will be lost on you.
Final thoughts on Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning
If I am being 100 percent honest, I do think that I slightly preferred Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning over this one, but Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning was still a great time. It does perhaps last a little too long, especially when you consider that this is a part 2, meaning that this “Reckoning” saga lasts six hours! Stil, when I came out of the theatre, my butt may have been dead, but I was very happy with how the Ethan Hunt saga came to an end.
