There are some kids movies that are just as much fun for the parents watching with the kids and Monsters vs. Aliens is one of those movies. This was brought to us from the magic factory that is known as DreamWorks and for years this movie was actually a favorite of my sons.

The Movie Review
The basics of the plot are that mankind is aware of the existence of monsters and there is a department that actually has a team of these monsters. The leader of this department is General Warren R. Monger who voiced by Kiefer Sutherland. He runs the facility where the monsters live and he looks after them and sends them on missions.
That is right this group of monsters goes on missions and they are prepared for the biggest mission of their life…. An alien invasion! The story is full of so many laughs and has so many sci-fi tropes that it is impossible not to laugh. Even the “evil” alien Gallaxhar is awesome. He is actually voiced by Rainn Wilson and his computer is voiced by Amy Poehler.
On the surface, the movie is about monsters fighting aliens and that alone would be great for a kids movie. However, as this is a DreamWorks movie there is way more depth here. That depth comes in the form of the monsters trying to figure out their place on this planet and come to terms with being ok with being who there are.
This is especially true for Reese Witherspoon’s character, Susan. She was just a normal woman, on her way to get married when a radioactive meteor caused her to grow super tall and also have super strength. Her coming to terms with her new life is actually done very well.
There are other members of the monsters team of course. B.O.B is played by Seth Rogan and is my personal favorite character in the movie. He is indestructible and is just a giant mass that is the result of a tomato being fused with modified ranch dressing. B.O.B is awesome, he may not be the smartest, but that is part of what makes him so funny.
Then we have The Missing Link, Will Arnett does the honors here and Link really wants to fit in with the rest of the world. What I love about Link is that he is kind of a jerk, he thinks he is cool and super in shape. Really he is kind of fat and a bit on the abrasive side.
Then we have two Monsters vs. Aliens insect characters. Dr. Cockroach is voiced by Hugh Laurie and he was an amazing scientist who “accidentally” turned himself into a cockroach. He and Susan actually have a really special relationship where he helps her come to terms with what she has become. In a weird way, Dr. Cockroach may be the most human of all the monsters.
Last, but not least is Insectosaurus who is a giant grub that is kind of like the Godzilla of the team. He has a good relationship with Link who is actually the only person who actually knows what he is talking about.
This is called Monsters vs Aliens and there is certainly a lot of monsters doing monster stuff and aliens trying to take over the world, but the movie is so much more than that. It really is a cleverly written movie and you do actually care about all of the monster characters as they are developed so well. It is the kind of movie that when you watch it as a family each family member will have their favorite.
For me, Monsters vs Aliens is a very easy movie to recommend to kids and big parent sized kids too! It is a lot of fun and has some of the best characters DreamWorks has ever created. This did spawn a bit of a franchise, but one I have to give special attention to is, Monsters vs. Aliens: Mutant Pumpkins from Outer Space. This is a short, but it is every bit as good as the main movie so be sure to check that out too.
