Omen III: The Final Conflict

I think that The Omen is a damn fine horror series, I have already looked at the original Omen, Damien – Omen II, and even the 2006 Omen and I had good things to say about all of them. For many people, 1981’s Omen III: The Final Conflict is a garbage movie, but I think that is a little bit harsh. Is it as good as the movies that came before it? Absolutely not, but I have certainly seen worse horror movies.

The Movie Review

I think that the premise of Omen III: The Final Conflict is better than the execution if that makes sense. The movie takes place many years after the events of Omen II and Damien is now all grown up and played by Sam Neil. Sam Neil is pretty awesome in this role and he has a real creepiness about him. I wonder if he used what he did here or was at least inspired by it when he made Event Horizon in 1997. By the way, Event Horizon is a top-tier sci-fi horror movie if you have not seen it, forget Omen III, go and watch that instead.

Interestingly, Damien has now become the American Ambassador in the UK, the job his father used to have. Although Damien’s real job is not making sure UK/USA relations are good, it is to prevent the second coming of Christ! You see, if Christ shows up again, Damien will have his powers greatly weakened.

The way that Damien goes about this is pretty dark, even for the Antichrist! Damien has the idea to have his followers kill all newborn males that are born on the date the Second Coming is said to be born! However, there is a group of monks led by Father DeCarlo who have the daggers needed to kill Damien.

A Deeper Look into Damien’s Storyline

A neat extra bit of the plot is that Damien meets a woman called Kate who has a son called David whom Damien takes under his demonic wing. I think that they have some good ideas in Omen III: The Final Conflict, especially the stuff with The Second Coming and the last act of the movie is pretty exciting as you get a literal showcase of good vs evil, but I do think this could have been a bit more spectacular.

To be fair, I do think that they wrap the trilogy up pretty well here. Yes, this is not as good as the two movies that came before it, but I also think that it is nowhere near as terrible as some people would have you believe. In watching this again recently, it was actually better than I remembered it being.

Should You Complete the Omen Trilogy?

If you have watched the first two Omen movies, you might as well go ahead and do the whole trilogy and watch this one too. Sam Neil is good as Damien and to be honest, I would have been down to see him somehow reprise this role again. The series would lay dormant for over a decade after this and let me give you a little preview for Omen IV: The Awakening, it is easily the worst movie in the series!
