Phenomenon

I remember seeing 1996’s Phenomenon pretty heavily advertised before it came out. In the mid-90s, John Travolta really turned his career around, mainly thanks to Pulp Fiction in 1994 and Get Shorty in 1995, two fantastic movies. I get the feeling that with those movies being such huge hits and people falling in love with John Travolta again, the studio decided to put some muscle behind Phenomenon and promote it.

The Movie Review

I saw this back in the day, and it honestly left no impression on me whatsoever. If you had asked me about Phenomenon, I would have either said, “Is that the LL Cool J album you are talking about?” or “Is that the movie where John Travolta has superpowers?”. I watched this for the first time in over 20 years recently, and it was very bland and pretty much instantly forgettable. It is not a horrible movie, but there is nothing here that makes me say you need to go out of your way to watch it.

The Cast of Phenomenon Brings Familiar Faces

In addition to John Travolta playing the lead role of George, this movie has a great supporting cast with Forest Whitaker, Robert Duvall, Jeffery DeMunn, Kyra Sedgwick, and the one I got the biggest kick out of, Data himself, Brent Spiner. No one in the movie delivers a bad performance, but they did not exactly have all that much to work with.

Plot Summary: George’s Mysterious Transformation

The plot is about a man called George. George works as a mechanic in a small town. He is a nice guy, and he has a thing for a single mother called Lace. After celebrating his birthday, George sees a weird light in the sky that hits him, and it gives him advanced intelligence as well as telekinesis abilities. He no longer needs to sleep, he is able to read at an incredible rate, and he comes up with all these great ideas and things that helps his community.

What Worked and What Didn’t in Phenomenon

s I am writing this, it makes me realize that I do actually love the premise of the movie. However, it is just pretty boring, and the way that it ends just felt really strange to me, like what was the point? What was the strange ball of light that hit George? Was he chosen to have these abilities? It just leaves a lot of questions that would have been good to know the answer to. I do not even think it is a case of the movie trying to be mysterious or anything like that.

The Pacing and Runtime

Phenomenon comes in at around two hours, and it feels like they could have shaved off like 20 minutes, and the movie would have been no worse for it. It just feels like something is missing, not even the lack of answering questions, but some kind of real peril. Sure, George gets taken in by the FBI, but nothing really comes of it, and I never once felt any real danger.

Final Thoughts on Phenomenon

There are some movies from the 90s that I have watched recently, and I know for 100 percent I will go the rest of my life without watching them again, and I can add Phenomenon to that list. I have certainly seen way worse movies than this one, but this was just a bland and kind of boring movie to sit through, thank goodness for the large bar of Galaxy chocolate I had, as it made the experience better!
