Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales

I saw Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales a little late and by the time I saw it I had heard many mixed things about it! The fifth movie in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise and if you believe the rumors, the last starring Johnny Depp. It added some backstory as well as enough new characters and ideas to take the franchise in a new direction.

The Film Review

For me, the Pirates of the Caribbean series is all about fun and I think the word fun is the best way to describe this movie. I think the story that they told here was really well done. The basic idea of the story is there is something called Trident of Poseidon and Captain Salazar (played by Javier Bardem) wants to use to not just get revenge on Jack, but kill all the pirates on the high seas!

With Salazar’s motivations, we also get to see some of Jack Sparrows back story. I actually really enjoyed this and the special effects they used to make the young actor look like Johnny Depp were very impressive. I loved how they managed to flesh out Jack Sparrow in this movie and if this did turn out to be the end for Depp in the franchise it

The other main characters in the movie are new and they are Henry Turner who is the son of Will and Elizabeth from the earlier movies. As well as Henry, a feisty young woman called Kaya Scodelario joins the franchise. Who she is and who her father is was something that I thought was really cool.

Henry wants to get the Trident of Poseidon so that he can remove the curse that his father, Will Turner has had all these years. If he can do this then Will can come home. Henry is joined by Kaya and of course Jack Sparrow as they do all they can to get the artifact before Salazar and his army of ghost pirates.

Captain Barbosa also returns and his character has had quite the good fortune since we saw him last. I have always enjoyed the rocky relationship that Barbosa and Jack have and this movie plays on that very well. Johnny Depp and Geoffrey Rush have fantastic chemistry and it still has a spark all these years later.

As you would expect with a Pirates of the Caribbean movie, the special effects are fantastic. The exotic locations, the ghost pirates, the high sea battles and everything in between all looks amazing. Add to this a thrilling score and it has you on the edge of your seat when there is action going down.

I also feel that from a story point of view, Dead Men Tell No Tales is a lot of fun and I could easily see the series having a direct sequel or going in a new direction after this. Make sure you watch the end credits scene as it will leave your jaw on the floor. Seriously this is one of the coolest end credit scenes of any movie!

I know that this is a movie that has a rather split opinion on how good it is, but I thought it was a lot of fun. If you are a fan of the franchise, you will love seeing a young Jack Sparrow and finding out more about him, but you will also love the new characters too. Dead Men Tell No Tales is well worth a watch and it actually got me excited for the franchise going forward.
