I loved Point Break back in the 90s. but it is a movie that I have come to just appreciate even more as I have gotten older. This is a double whammy for me as I consider Point Break to be one of the best Keanu Reeves and Patrick Swayze movies. I remember introducing this to my wife who had never seen it and she was shocked to see Patrick Swayze playing a villain, but there is no denying he does a great job and is a super likable villain.
How to Download Point Break
Point Break was released on July 12, 1991. You can download or stream the film from a digital platform. Click on the Download button at the end of this review and make your choice. If you like Keanu Reeves, check him out in Johnny Mnemonic (1995), The Matrix (1999), Constantine (2005), or John Wick (2014). On the other hand, if you want to see more movies with Patrick Swayze, we recommend Dirty Dancing (1987) or Ghost (1990).
The Movie Review
This is the movie that started Keanu Reeves onto the action star path that he would continue on for part of the 90s. Keanu Reeves plays the role of a hotshot rookie FBI agent called Johnny Utah. I just love the name Johnny Utah as it sounds so cheesy and made up and so incredibly 90s.
Johnny Utah is working with an older FBI agent called Angelo Pappas. Pappas has been dealing with a crew of bank robbers that wear masks and are called, The Ex-Presidents as the masks are all based on former presidents. These guys never hit the vault of a bank, just the teller draws and they are in and out in 90 seconds and they are kind of chill and never kill anyone.
The case is a hard one to crack, but Pappas has a theory that they are surfers and that is where Johnny Utah comes in as he is tasked with going undercover as a surfer to try and find out more. There is a young woman working at a bar called Tyler and she is Jonny’s in with a group of surfers led by Patrick Swayze’s Bodhi. When it comes to Patrick Swayze, Bodhi and Dalton from Road House are my two favorite roles that he has done.
Memorable Cameo and Character Dynamics
Before I get any further, I have to tell you about a really cool cameo in Point Break and that is for Anthony Kiedis from the Red Hot Chili Peppers as a surfer. Johnny starts to get closer to Bodhi and his crew and he is really taken in by Bodhi and his views of life, love, and more. Of course, Johnny also starts to actually develop feelings for Tyler as well.
What we have is a really fun thriller and while we do know the identities of the Ex-Presidents quite early on, I think that the movie still has a lot of tension. The way that Bodhi starts to go off the deep end and even starts to abandon some of the principles that he talks about is very well done.
The Unforgettable Ending and Legacy
The ending fight sequence and the way the movie comes to a close is really awesome, actually the whole movie is awesome. This is a “lightning in a bottle” kind of movie that just hit everything just right. They tried to remake this and to be honest, I have seen worse remakes, but it lacks the spark of what made the original such a special kind of movie.
Point Break is one of those movies that I have upgraded several times because I love it so much. I had the VHS, then the DVD, then the Blu-Ray and now I have the 4K, not many movies get me to upgrade each time a slightly better version comes out. While this may be as 90s as you can get, Point Break also has a timeless charm to it that makes it just as much fun today as it was back in the early 90s.
