It is so easy to look at Puss in Boots as a quick cash grab and a way for DreamWorks to make some more money out of the Shrek franchise. That though is so, so unfair to this movie and everyone involved in it as this is one of the best movies in the whole Shrek series. Not only that, Puss in Boots stands on its own as a purrfect movie…. Ok, no more horrible puns!

The Review
Puss in Boots has an all-star cast. You of course once again have Antonio Banders as Puss in Boots. We also have Salma Hayek as Kitty Softpaws and Zack Galifianakis as Humpty Dumpty who make up our trio of heroes in the movie. The villains are Jack and Jill who are played by Billy Bob Thornton and Amy Sedaris. I really like the smaller more focused cast of Puss in Boots and think it makes the movie flow much better.
The story of Puss in Boots is actually set before he makes his debut in Shrek 2. It serves as an origin story for Puss as well as fleshing him out more and letting you see how awesome and heroic he really is!
Puss is on the run and he decides that he is going to make sure people remember the name Puss in Boots for the right reasons. He finds out that the evil Jack and Jill have the Magic Beans that he has long been after and he can use these to get to the top of a beanstalk and get a golden egg.
Throughout his quest, he comes across Kitty Softpaws and Humpty Dumpty. Words cannot say how much I love Humpty Dumpty in this movie. What is really cool is that he and Puss have a bit of an estranged relationship, but they work through it and you get to see that Humpty has a heart of “gold” and that he does the right thing in the end.
Jack and Jill are not the only things Puss and his friends have to worry about. Getting the Magic Beans is great and all, but there is something known as The Great Terror that is up there keeping things in check. I will not spoil what this is or what it does or even its fate, but it is pretty awesome.
Puss in Boots is a pretty straightforward movie and I actually mean that in a very positive way. The Humpty and Puss dynamic keeps you guessing, but the smaller cast along with the straightforward plot make for a movie that is a lot of fun. I have a hard time imagining that anyone could watch this and not have a great time!
The action is great and very well done. One extra thing I want to say here is that this is one of the better 3D animated movies I have seen so if you have the ability to watch the 3D Blu-Ray of this I highly recommend it as it really does spring to life.
Puss in Boots is a really charming movie. It is not just joke after joke (although it is funny) it also is a pretty smart movie and one that really does keep you on the edge of your seat. While it is part of the Shrek series, I feel that Puss in Boots more than stands on its own. I really do wish that we could have got a sequel to this as it is one of the better movies from the guys and gals at DreamWorks.
