It is crazy to think that it took over a decade to get a Puss in Boots sequel. I am a big fan of the Shrek series and thought that the first Puss in Boots movie was a lot of fun. Puss in Boots: The Last Wish sees Antonio Banderas once again pick up the sword, put on his boots, and get ready to go on a wild adventure.

The Movie Review
Speaking of Antonio Banderas, this movie has an awesome voice cast. Selma Hayek returns as Kittie Softpaws and we also have Florence Pugh voicing Goldie Locks as well as Olivia Colman, Ray Winston, and Samson Kayo voicing the three bears. John Mulaney voicing Big Jack Horner is hilarious and in all, the cast does a wonderful job here.
I think that DreamWorks tend to do a good job of making movies that are fun not just for kids, but adults as well. The plot of Puss in Boots: The Last Wish is pretty interesting in that Puss is trying to avoid death and he is coming to terms with his own mortality which is pretty deep for a “kids” movie.
You see, after an adventure, Puss dies and when he comes back he finds out he only has one life left. This causes him to have a bit of a crisis and Puss decides to live the rest of his days as a domesticated cat. It is here he makes “friends” with another cat called, Perrito, actually Perrito is a dog, but he is pretending to be a cat.
We have some interesting villains in this movie. I got such a kick out of the way that Goldilocks and the Three Bears are like London gangsters and when they come to visit Puss’s grave. Puss learns of a special star that is hidden in the woods that can be found with a magical map!
Puss decides to use this map to try and get the star so that he can wish for his 9 lives back. Of course, Goldilocks and the Three Bears along with the other villain of the movie, Jack Horner are also on the hunt for this special star and they all have their own reasons for wanting it!
Puss is not alone. As well as his new buddy Perrito, Kittie Softpaws come back into his life and we find out what happened to these two after the events of the last Shrek movie. I love what they do with Puss as a character here. He may seem selfish at first glance, but we learn that he is scared, emotional, and unsure of himself and it makes him such a complex character.
As you would expect from a DreamWorks movie, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish has a lot of humor. One of the things the first movie did very well was to be funny, but in a natural way where it never felt forced or the gags never felt like they were too much. That is the same here, yes, the movie is very funny, but not at the expense of the compelling plot.
For years I wanted DreamWorks to make a sequel and while it may have taken longer than I would have liked. Puss in Boots: The Last Wish is a fine sequel and every bit as good as the first movie. This is a movie that is perfect no matter if you are 5 or 105 as it has something for everyone.
