Secret Window

I like Johnny Depp and Stephen King so Secret Window always had a high chance of being a movie that I liked. Despite having read many of Stephen King’s books, this was not one I had heard of so when it was released back in 2004, I was excited. I watched this for the first time in many years recently and found it to be fun, but not as good as I remembered it being.

The Movie Review

A Big Twist That Defines the Film

Now, to be fair to Secret Window, this is a movie that has a very big twist to it right at the end. Once you know that twist, the movie loses a huge part of its appeal. Do not get me wrong the performances are still great and any time that Johnny Depp and John Turturro share the screen it is captivating.

Johnny Depp’s Performance as Mort

Johnny Depp plays the role of a writer called Mort. Mort is suffering from writer’s block and he is also dealing with his wife trying to push through a divorce after she had an affair. Mort is a very weird kind of guy and Johnny Depp absolutely nails this role as you like him, but you know that he is weird.

John Turturro as the Cold Antagonist

John Turturro on the other hand is as cold as ice. John Turturro plays the role of Shooter, he is also a writer and he shows up on Mort’s doorstep accusing him of plagiarism. Mort 100 percent denies this and claims that he has proof, he wrote his story before Shooter wrote his and this leads Shooter to demand that he provides the proof or there will be trouble.

Supporting Cast Enhances the Story

This is a fun and exciting thriller that does keep you guessing the first time you watch it. While it is impossible to talk about Secret Window without heaping praise on Johnny Depp and John Turturro. This movie also has a great supporting cast with Maria Bello as Mort’s ex-wife and Timothy Hutton as Ted, the man she had an affair with. Charles S Dutton and Len Cariou are also great in their roles here.

A Thrilling Climax

Without going into spoilers, the lead-up to the climax in Secret Window is so thrilling and the first time you watch this movie, you truly do wonder what the heck is going on. It is all done so well and it shows just why Johnny Depp is one of the all-time greats when it comes to acting. He keeps you in the palm of his hand and even when you know what is happening, he still keeps you on edge.

Rewatching and the Loss of Surprise

When I watched this again recently, I had a fun time, but I do have to say that the exciting ending did lose some of the wow factor and excitement as I knew the twist. I would say that Secret Window is a one-and-done kind of movie and there is nothing wrong with that. Some movies are meant to only be watched once and I would say that this movie is a great example of that. However, if you have not seen this for a very long time or simply have forgotten what the ending was, give it another watch.
