Sister Act

Back in the 80s and 90s, a new Whoopi Goldberg movie was a huge deal. I would go as far as to say that Sister Act is one of the best movies that she has ever done. Released in 1992, I watched this for the first time in a very, very long time recently and it holds up so well. This is just a fun time and the kind of movie that is ideal if you are in the mood for something light and fun.

The Movie Review

There are some movies that I like from the ’80s and ’90s that I feel you need to have seen them back then to appreciate them, Sister Act is not one of those movies. This to me is something that someone who has never seen it before could watch now and still have a super fun time with.

The Fun Premise

The premise of Sister Act is a lot of fun. Whoopi Goldberg plays a lounge singer called Deloris who performs in her boyfriend, Vince’s Las Vegas bar. This is about as seedy as you could imagine, but Deloris is one hell of a performer. Her boyfriend is a real sleazeball, but when she goes to deal with a gift that he gave her, things go very wrong.

The Witness Protection Plan

Turns out that not only is her boyfriend a sleazebag, but he is also a pretty big-time crook. Deloris sees Vince taking out a guy and this puts her on his hitlist. Deloris manages to get away from Vince before he can kill her. She heads to the cops who listen to her and they have a great idea.

They decide to hide Deloris in the witness protection program. The place the cops send Deloris to is a convent where she has to pretend to be a nun until the heat has died down. As you would expect, a Vegas lounge singer has a hard time fitting in, but Deloris is so likable, she eventually wins the nuns over and manages to transform their choir, making everyone love her.

The Climactic Showdown

Of course, Vince eventually finds out that she is hiding out in this convent and has his goons go and take her, but the nuns are not going to let her be killed without putting up a fight. Sister Act is just a whole lot of fun from the start all the way until the end. One of the things that I get a kick out of is how the movie is one part crime caper and another part musical and it all comes together really well.

Final Thoughts

The movie was a massive hit back in the day and it is one of those movies that you never really hear anyone say a bad word about. I watched the sequel shortly after that and it was not as good as this one, but it was way better than I remembered it being. I would love to check out the stage show of this as I have heard very good things about it.

I caught this on Disney Plus, but I enjoyed it so much, I think I need to add the Blu-Ray to my collection. This is a fun movie that will entertain you from start to end, it will make you laugh, but you will also really care about the characters. I am honestly shocked at how much I enjoyed this and how well it holds up.
