I know this may sound crazy to some, but Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is the most fun I have had in a movie theatre in a very long time. I went to see this with my son, I grew up a huge fan of Sonic and he has too. This is the movie he has long dreamed of and it is the movie that I dreamed of as a kid too!

The Movie Review
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 takes place after the events of the first movie. Sonic is living a good life with his surrogate dad Tom “the donut lord” and he wants Sonic to be happy and find a purpose in his life. Sonic is left alone for the weekend as Tom is heading off to see his sister-in-law get married. To say things get nuts is an understatement.
Dr. Robotnik returns and he is not alone. You see, while exiled, Robotnik meets Knuckles who informs him that he is looking for The Master Emerald, Robotnik takes advantage of this and “helps” Knuckles. This brings them to Earth which is where The Master Emerald is located.
The only force that can stop them from causing chaos is of course Sonic, but he is not alone. Sonic is joined by Tails and the two of them must do all they can to stop Robotnik and Knuckles. If you have played the games, you know that the plot is clearly taken from the Sonic the Hedgehog 3 video game, however, I feel that the execution has more in line with the Sonic Adventure games.
There is just so much fan service here, way more than what was in the first movie. The thing about the fan service is that it never felt forced. Those that got it got a huge kick out of it, but it would not have alienated any non Sonic super fans. They walked that line of catering to everyone very well.
Ben Schwartz once again voices Sonic and he does a great job, Tails is voiced by the same actor from the video games so that is cool, but it is Knuckles who is getting all the attention. We have heard Knuckles talk in many games and shows, but Idris Elba brings a real badass and sophisticated kind of vibe to Knuckles, I was not sure if it would work, but it really does.
One thing that the last movie (after the massive amount of rework that went into it) never got enough credit for was the CGI. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 looks so good, seriously this is one of the best-looking animated characters I have seen on the big screen. The fight between Sonic and Knuckles is just pure eye-candy and done so well.
Do I recommend Sonic the Hedgehog 2? Heck yes, I do, this movie was so much fun that my son and I are going back to watch it again next weekend! If you liked the first you will love this, if you were lukewarm on the first, this will warm you up! Just make sure you stay all the way to the end as there is a truly epic credits scene that has me pumped for the 3rd movie!
