Brought to us by the same studio that gave is the awesome Ice Age. Spies in Disguise is a charming animated spy movie that is great for kids and adults alike. It actually took me a while to get round to seeing this. However, I watched it last weekend with my son and we have a lot of fun with it.
The premise of the movie is that we have a secret agent called, Lance Sterling (Will Smith) and his Walter Beckett (Tom Holland) who is a genius, all be it social awkward scientist who makes the gadgets the agency uses. Thanks to an “accident” Lance gets turned into a pigeon and he along with Walter needs to not only turn him back but also save the world from a crazy villain called Killian (Ben Mendelsohn).
The plot of the movie sounds like your average cheesy spy movie, but it is done with its tongue firmly in cheek. If you like spy movies such as James Bond, you are going to have a lot of fun with this movie. I feel that is why it works for both adults and kids as it is very, very funny, but it has a lot of humor for us adults as well.

The Movie Review
I have already mentioned Will Smith and Tom Holland, but Blue Sky Studios got one hell of a cast for this movie. Rashida Jones, Karren Gillan, and Reba McEntire are also great in their roles here. There are lots of little cameos too such as Mark Ronson and DJ Khaled who are a lot of fun to hear in the movie.
What I think really makes the movie shine is the relationship between Lance and Walter. These two could not be any more different, but they have to embrace what makes each of them special to save the day and of course turn Lance back human. I know that the plot may be a tad predictable, but that does not mean it is not a fun time.
Spies in Disguise is a great-looking movie. Blue Sky Studios are one of the best when it comes to animation and they have really outdone themselves here. Lance, once he is a pigeon is fantastic, you can tell it is Will Smith and it is hilarious. It was interesting to see Blue Sky Studios have to do more “realistic” sets and backgrounds for this movie over what they usually do.
If you are looking for a movie to watch with the kids or even something fun and light-hearted you and your other half can watch, you can do a heck of a lot worse than this. I was not super into Spies in Disguise once I saw the trailer, but about five minutes after the movie started, I was all in. It is a movie that has a lot of laughs and some exciting action, but it does also have a lot of heart too.
