While 1989’s Star Trek V: The Final Frontier may not have been all that great, 1991’s Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country more than makes up for it, I really do enjoy this movie and think it is a lot of fun and quite different from what came before it. To be honest, I think that Star Trek V performing the way that it did, probably resulted in them making this movie.

The Movie Review – A Thrilling Return to Form for Star Trek
With Star Trek V not being well received, the director of Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, Nicholas Meyer would take charge here and he did a fantastic job. This is a more scaled-down kind of story in comparison to them trying to find God in Star Trek V! I would say that Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country is kind of like Captain America: The Winter Soldier of Star Trek movies as it deals with espionage and is more of a thriller than just pure action.
A Gripping Plot of Diplomacy and Intrigue
The plot of this movie is really entertaining. There is a mining accident on the Klingon moon that has caused devastation on the planet below. It is so bad that the Klingon can no longer risk being at war with the Federation and try to get peace talks going. As you would expect with how things have been between the Klingon and the Federation, it is tense, to say the least.
Kirk’s Conflict and the Frozen Prison Planet
Captain Kirk is a bit hesitant as his son was killed by Klingons. During the supposed peace talks, all hell breaks loose, people end up dead and the crew of the Enterprise are set up for it! Kirk and McCoy are the ones who the Klingons hold responsible and they are going to be sent to a prison planet. I just love the whole aesthetic of this frozen prison planet, easily one of my favorite places from any Star Trek movie!
Spock’s Investigation and the Conspiracy Unveiled
While Kirk and McCoy are dealing with trouble on this frosty prison planet, Spock has been hard at work. Spock has realized that there is some kind of conspiracy and that the real assassins are still on board his ship! This leads to a really cool kind of mystery where they try to find the assassins and just when you think it has been cracked, another curve ball is thrown your way!
A Perfect Blend of Thriller, Action, and Humor
This is honestly really awesome and fun stuff and I love the way that the movie keeps you guessing. While I do think that they went for more of a thriller here, we do have some pretty fun action scenes too. Speaking of fun, despite the whole espionage and assassination stuff going on here, I do think that Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country manages to get the humor just right too. It is not overdone, but there are parts that will make you smile and chuckle as you watch this movie.
A Fitting Farewell to the Original Crew
This was such a great send-off for the original crew, granted we would see them again in Star Trek Generations a few years later, but as the last original Star Trek movie, this was a great way to go out. People always talk about The Wrath of Khan and the other movies of that trilogy, but I would put Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country right up there with them. I watched the VHS of this as a kid over and over again as I loved it so much
